The lead vocalist of a popular boy band will be questioned for allegedly paying a runaway teenage girl for sex, police said yesterday.
Investigators at the Siheung Police Precinct in Gyeonggi Province said they learned the singer, surnamed Jeon, committed the offense while they were investigating three men arrested for forcing two runaway teenage girls to have sex with male customers. The men allegedly earned 35 million won ($30,434) in profits.
According to police, the suspects, all in their 20s, told the girls that they would help them find a home where they could stay. They then allegedly raped the girls and forced them into prostitution.
The men worked as pimps to find male clients interested in having sex with underage girls. Once they found a potential client, the group gave the man a girl’s cell phone number. The sex typically took place at the client’s home, police said.
One of the girls, surnamed Kim, reportedly had sex with over 200 male clients, including Jeon. Police say he had sex with her three times at his home in February in Jongno, central Seoul. A police officer said Kim’s mobile phone contained Jeon’s mobile phone number. Police also obtained records of phone conversations between Jeon and Kim.
“Police have requested Jeon to appear for questioning for the second time because he didn’t appear for questioning on Dec. 3,” the police officer said. Police asked Jeon to appear for questioning by Dec. 14. An official at Jeon’s agency declined to comment on the matter, saying he didn’t know about it and would need to ask Jeon whether it was true or not.
Kim also said she had sex with a senior executive at a large entertainment management agency and a CEO of a high-profile IT firm. Police said they plan to investigate these charges.
