Taliban warns Korea of “bad consequences”

The Taliban has warned the Korean government that its recent decision to dispatch troops to Afghanistan would lead to “bad consequences.”
According to an e-mail statement, the Taliban noted that Seoul withdrew its forces after 23 Korean Christian missionaries were kidnapped and that it had promised it “will never try to send their forces again in future.”
"If they send their forces to Afghanistan and break their promise, then they should also be prepared for bad consequences," the statement read, adding that the Taliban "will never resort to a soft approach anymore."
On Tuesday, Korea announced that it had finalized a plan to send up to 350 troops to protect aid workers in Afghanistan, and the measure is pending a National Assembly approval.
In response to the Taliban warning, Korean officials said they had predicted such Taliban action and that they would not change their plan.

탈레반은 특히 2007년 한국인 봉사단원 납치극 당시 인질을 풀어준 사실을 언급하면서 “당시 한국은 아프간에서 군대를 철수하고 다시는 파병하지 않기로 약속했는데, 이 약속을 깨고 군대를 보낸다면 나쁜 결말을 맞을 준비가 돼 있어야 한다. 탈레반은 더 이상 부드러운 대응을 하지 않을 것”이라고 밝혔다.
한국 정부는 앞서 8일 아프간에 350여 명 내외의 파병동의안을 확정, 발표한 바 있다.
탈레반의 경고에 대해 정부 당국자는 “탈레반 세력이나 알카에다 등으로부터 위협이 있을 수 있다는 것은 정부의 파병 결정 과정에서 이미 예상했던 일”이라며 “경고에도 불구하고 파병 결정에는 아무런 영향이 없을 것”이라고 말했다. 이 당국자는 이어 “정부는 현재 아프가니스탄에 체재 중인 국민들에 대한 안전 조치를 취하고 있다”고 덧붙였다.
