The Incheon Metropolitan City, Seoul National University Hospital and Johns Hopkins Medicine International have signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in building a world-class hospital and a biomedical research center in the Songdo District of the Incheon Free Economic Zone, a new district being developed off the coast of Incheon, the city said yesterday.
Incheon said that the hospital is scheduled to open in 2013 with some 600 beds. The size of the hospital will be enlarged in stages.
“It is most likely that the establishment of a worldwide hospital will be fulfilled within Songdo with participations from SNU and Johns Hopkins hospitals,” Ahn Sang-soo, mayor of Incheon, said. “Living conditions for Incheon citizens and expats in the city are going to be improved. We will also experience a large demand for high-quality health care in Korea and the region.”
Construction of the hospital is slated to begin next year. It will occupy 80,000 square meters (861,112 square feet) of land in Songdo and have a 400 billion won ($343 million) budget.
Incheon said the hospital expects to create jobs for about 5,000 workers, including some 500 medical doctors and 2,000 nurses as well as a large inflow of foreign capital worth between $200 and $300 million.
In addition, the city also said that investment from foreign companies will likely be spurred on in the district, and many biomedical research institutes and firms are going to recieve benefits. Johns Hopkins Hospital, affiliated with the medical school at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in the U.S., opened in 1889.
