SNU to head abroad for new recruits

By Seo Ji-eun

Seoul National University said yesterday its admission officers will tour three cities in China next June to recruit students with excellent academic talent. The university will later expand its search to other countries.

“We have adopted an overseas student recruiting system to attract a variety of excellent students from around the world in this globalized age. We will finish preparations, including the regulatory reforms necessary to invite those students by February of next year,” said an SNU spokesman.

When recruiting in China, SNU will select students by interviewing applicants among the top 100 takers of annual college entrance exam - similar to Korea’s College Scholastic Ability Test - in respective provinces.

Those who pass the interview will enter the national university in fall semester that begins in September. Those with outstanding records will receive scholarships and monthly allowances for four years. The school year begins in spring at all Korean universities. Under that system, those ethnic Korean students in China who graduate from high schools in July would find it difficult to skip a semester to get into SNU. SNU said it will revise regulations to allow for school entrance from the beginning of the semester.
