“집의 크기 자체는 중요하지 않다. 어느 집 옆에 궁전이 들어서면 그 집이 오두막으로 변해 버리는 게 문제일 뿐.” 일찍이 행복의 상대성을 갈파했던 카를 마르크스의 말이다. 주변의 부자들이 내게 불행의 씨앗이 될 수 있다는 얘기다. 과거에 비해 훨씬 잘살게 된 인류가 왜 그만큼 더 행복해지지 않았는지에 대한 해답이 바로 여기 있다. 행복은 절대적인 부가 아니라 상대적인 부의 크기에 좌우된다는 거다. 영국 경제학자 리처드 레이어드는 돈을 많이 벌어 남들의 시기심을 일으키는 건 사회적 공해라고까지 주장했다.

한국의 경우 남녀 평등 성적이 134개국 중 115위라는 세계경제포럼(WEF) 보고서가 적잖은 충격을 던졌다. 의회·장관직 여성 비율 등에서 점수가 워낙 저조해 인도(114위)보다도 순위가 밀렸다. “남성 인권을 보장해 달라”는 개그까지 나왔지만 한국 여성의 정치·경제적 위상은 여전히 한국 남성은 물론 다른 나라 여성에 못 미치는 게 현실이다. 여자들이 썩 행복하지 않다고 한대도 배부른 투정으로만 치부하기 힘든 이유다.

ⓒ on the status of → in terms of 신문의 ‘조사된 남녀 평등 성적 보고서’이라는 한국말을 그대로 영어로 바꾸어 surveyed on the status of gender equality을 썼음. 하지만 영어식 문장은 ‘남녀 평등에 관해서 조사된 리포트의 성적’과 같이 뒤에서 앞을 꾸며주는 한국말과는 다소 다른 문장의 순서를 가지고 있음. 또한 ‘남녀 평등의 성적’에 대해서 조사된 것이 아니라 ‘남녀 평등’에 대해서 조사된 것이 성적으로 나온 것이므로 the status를 빼주고 ‘~에 관하여’에 해당하는 in terms of을 넣음.
