In March 2000, a man dressed like a tourist stood at the immigration counter at the airport. When the immigration officer recognized him, the man asked politely, “Please do not report to your superior that I am here, since I am going on a private holiday.” It seemed that the man, Park Jie-won, was telling the truth, because when he came back, there was an intelligence report on his desk: “Culture Minister Park Jie-won went abroad for holidays.”

Writing Tip
ⓐ As → When As는 When이나 While에 비해 동시성이 강한 단어이므로 ‘~때’의 의미인 When을 넣어줌.
ⓑ he → the man 여기서 he가 될 수 있는 사람이 the immigration officer과 a man dressed like a tourist이므로 누구를 가리키는 말인지 명확하게 해줌.
ⓓ He was right → It seemed that the man, Park Jie-won, was telling the truth 전체적인 문맥상으로 the man이 진짜로 휴가를 다녀온 것이 아니라, 휴가를 다녀온 것 처럼 가장한 것임. 그러므로 ‘the man이 옳았다’ 보다는 ‘the man은 사실을 말하는 것처럼 보였다’라고 수정.

Hitoshi Tanaka, who became the chief of the Asia-Oceania Bureau of the Japanese Foreign Ministry in Sept. 2001, went abroad every weekend but came to the office on Mondays as usual, as if there was nothing out of the ordinary going on. He kept this schedule up for nearly a year. It was in September of the following year, when Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s Pyongyang visit was announced, that the truth behind his “weekend activity” was revealed. He had met with a secret North Korean envoy over 30 times in a third country to discuss matters related to a summit meeting between North Korea and Japan.

Writing Tip
ⓑ unusual → out of the ordinary going on 앞에 ‘as usual’이란 표현을 썼으므로, 중복되는 unusual이란 표현보다 ‘평소와 다른’ ‘여느 때와 다른’이란 ‘out of ordinary’을 써줌.
ⓒ And → 써주지 않음.
ⓓ It was over 30 times that he met → it was over 30 times 생략 후 he had met으로 수정.
