Police seek warrant to arrest son in parricide case

Police in Yeongam County, South Jeolla, yesterday requested an arrest warrant for a 24-year-old college senior surnamed Kim for alleged parricide. Kim allegedly killed his father, 51, with a blunt instrument during a dispute on Christmas Eve. He is accused of later killing his mother as he tried to cover up his deed.
Investigators secured evidence of the crime, including ashes of his parents’ clothes stained with their blood and footage of CCTV installed near a town supermarket.
The footage shows his whereabouts on the date of the crime.
Police also conducted a probe into his deceased parents’ life insurance and financial condition.
“Although Kim claims that he had accidentally murdered his parents while he was accusing his father of abusing his mother, we are examining whether there were other motives or an accomplice,” police said. However, other motives for the case have not yet been found.
A search was conducted yesterday morning for two hours at Kim’s residence and a reservoir where he allegedly abandoned weapons. During the inquiry, police said the son calmly reenacted the crime.
He showed that he first went into his home through his mother’s adjacent calligraphy academy and killed his parents in the kitchen and a small bedroom.
When asked “Were you usually unhappy with your father?” by the press, Kim said: “He drank and made mistakes.” About the slaying of his mother, he hesitated, then said, “I was out of my mind.”
“It seems as if he was often bitter about his dad having a quarrel with his mom and committed the crime,” said Yeongam Police Precinct official Kim Jae-chan.
