Flu fears closing festival doors

In a season that should be full of festivals, fears of the new flu are closing festival doors around the country. The loss of revenue has angered festival organizers that were hoping the added income would give them a boost in the current economic downturn, while the loss of beloved festival events has upset attendees.

가을은 통상 각종 축제로 붐비는 시즌이지만 신종 플루의 공포가 전국 축제를 취소시키고 있다. 모두가 경제적으로 어려운 이 시기에 축제로 인한 부가 수익을 기대했던 축제 조직위원회들은 취소로 인한 금전적 손실에 화가 났고, 축제 참가를 계획했던 사람들은 갑자기 사라진 축제 앞에 당황하고 있다.
Some festival organizers, bowing to a decline in demand for tickets, have canceled or postponed their events voluntarily. But others say they came under pressure to do so after a government request that festivals be cancelled was issued early this month.

As the A(H1N1) influenza virus spreads, hundreds of festivals and events have been postponed or canceled. Among the axed major festivals are the Jeonju International Sori Festival, the Andong International Mask Dance Festival, the Onggi Expo Ulsan Korea and the Bucheon World Intangible Cultural Heritage Expo, to name a few.

The Gwangju World Photonics Expo 2009 was postponed to the spring. Now, the organizers of these festivals are busy refunding tickets, canceling contracts with private organizations and performing groups and making apologies to the public.

올 가을에 예정되어있던 광주 세계 광(光)엑스포는 내년 봄으로 연기되었다. 취소된 각 축제 조직위들은 현재 티켓을 환불하고, 관련 단체와 참여 단체들과의 계약을 취소하고, 관중들에게 사과를 하느라 바쁘다.
“Many of the visitors to our festival are children and seniors, and there would have been a high chance of infection,” said Kim Myung-gon, chairman of the Jeonju International Sori Festival Organizing Committee, explaining why the festival was canceled. “The level of participation from the community also seemed low because of the flu, and the situation looked bad.”

“우리 축제 방문자들이 대부분 아이들과 노인들이어서 (축제를 강행하면) 신종 플루에 감염될 소지가 높았을 것”이라는 것이 취소된 전주 국제 소리 축제 조직위원장인 김명곤 씨의 설명이다. 그는 “신종 플루 때문에 지역사회의 참여율도 낮을 것으로 보였고 전반적으로 상황이 좋지 않았다”고 덧붙였다.
According to the organizing committee, the ninth annual Jeonju festival, which was originally scheduled from Sept. 23 to 27, could have pulled in more than 2 million spectators. According to the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, 270 of the 1,049 festivals around the nation scheduled between September and December have been cut. Considering that the number only includes events lasting two days or longer with expected attendance of over 1,000 participants, there could even be more festivals that have been canceled.

올해 9회째인 전주 국제 소리 축제는 원래 9월 23~27일로 예정되어 있었고, 200만 명이 넘는 관객을 끌어 모았을 것이라는 것이 조직위의 예상이었다. 행정안전부에 따르면, 9월~12월 중에 예정되어 있던 1,049개의 축제들 중에서 270개가 취소되었다. 이 숫자가 2일 이상 지속하면서 1,000명 이상의 인원이 참가할 것으로 예상된 축제들만 포함된 것을 고려하면, 실제 취소된 축제의 수는 그 이상일 수 있다.
Most of the festivals are organized by regional governments and the festivals tend to be dedicated to showcasing provincial cultural traditions.
