President Lee has private meeting with his rival Park

In a rare meeting with former political rival Park Geun-hye, President Lee Myung-bak discussed yesterday a wide range of issues including inter-Korean ties, the administration’s project to restore four major rivers and the country’s plan to host an international summit next year, the former Grand National chairwoman said.

어제 예전 정치적 경쟁자 박근혜와 오랜만에 가진 회동에서 이명박 대통령은 남북관계, 4대강 복원사업, 내년 G-20 정상회담 개최 계획 등을 포함한 여러 가지 국정 현안에 대해 얘기를 나눴다고 박 전 한나라당 대표가 말했다.
In an apparent move to mend often rocky relations, the Blue House had arranged the meeting with Park, an influential lawmaker who lost in the GNP’s presidential primary to Lee in 2007.

종종 갈등을 빚었던 관계를 개선하기 위한 조치로 청와대가 이 회동을 준비했다. 박 전 대표는2007년 한나라당 대선후보 경선에서 이명박 후보에게 패배했던 영향이 큰 국회의원이다.
On the surface, the meeting was labeled as an opportunity for Park to report to the president about her recent tour of Europe as Lee’s special envoy. But indications are that the meeting was more than a courtesy call.

표면상으로는 이 회동은 박 전 대표가 대통령 특사로 유럽 순방을 다녀온 결과를 대통령에게 보고하는 자리였다. 그러나 이 만남은 예방 이상의 의미를 지녔다.
According to Park and the Blue House, Lee and Park discussed broad issues during a private meeting that followed a briefing on Park’s European mission. From Aug. 24 to Sept. 5, Park visited Hungary, Denmark, Belgium and the European Union on Lee’s behalf.

박 전 대표와 청와대에 따르면, 이 대통령과 박 전 대표는 유럽순방 보고 이후에 있었던 독대에서 폭넓은 현안들에 대해 얘기를 나눴다. 박 전 대표는 대통령 특사로 8월24일부터 9월5일까지 헝가리, 덴마크, 벨기에, EU를 방문했다.
Blue House spokesman Park Sun-kyoo said Lee and Park talked for 43 minutes without their aides. The spokesman called the former GNP chairwoman President Lee’s partner for national governance, but did not disclose specifics of their one-on-one discussions.

청와대 박선규 대변인은 이 대통령과 박 전 대표가 43분 동안 배석자 없이 대화를 나눴다고 말했다. 대변인은 박 전 대표를 이 대통령의 국정 동반자로 호칭했으나 단독회담 내용은 공개하지 않았다.
While the presidential office remained tight-lipped, Park addressed journalists after her Blue House visit. “We have discussed various pending issues,” Park said. “We did not talk about the constitutional amendment. We exchanged opinions about inter-Korean issues, the four major river restoration projects, the plan to host the Group of 20 summit in Korea next year and other matters.”

청와대는 입을 굳게 다물었지만, 박 전 대표는 청와대 방문 후에 기자들에게 단독회담에 대해 설명했다. 박 전 대표는 “우리는 여러 가지 현안에 대해 의견을 나눴다. 우리는 개헌에 대해서는 얘기를 하지 않았다. 우리는 남북문제, 4대강 복원사업, 내년 G-20 정상회담 개최 등 여러 가지 현안에 대해 의견을 교환했다.”고 말했다.
