책 말리기

농부는 곡식을 말리고, 여인들은 옷가지를 말리며, 선비들은 높은 습기에 좀이 슬었던 책을 꺼내 말렸다. 대개 음력 7월 7일의 칠석(七夕) 이후에 행해졌다. 이 행사의 주요 대상은 책이다. 동양의 전통적인 종이가 습기에 약한 특징을 지녔기 때문이다. ‘포쇄’라는 이름의 행사는 중국에서 한(漢)대 이후 연중 행사로 자리 잡았으며, 조선의 왕조도 이때에 맞춰 실록을 비롯한 주요 문서들을 햇볕 아래에서 말렸다.

이 속기(俗氣) 가득한 행사를 꼬집는 사람들도 나타난다. 완함이라는 이는 일부러 집에서 누추한 옷들을 꺼내다 볕을 쪼였다. 사람들이 물으면 “남들이 하는 대로 따라 하는 것”이라는 퉁명스러운 대답으로 일관했다. 학륭이라는 사람의 태도는 더 특이했다. 사람들이 앞다퉈 호화 집기와 의복들을 내걸 즈음에 그는 윗옷을 훌렁 벗어젖힌 다음 마당에 누웠다. ‘저 사람이 도대체 뭘 하자는 거냐’는 눈길에도 아랑곳하지 않았다. 호기심을 이기지 못하고 “왜 옷을 벗고 누워 있느냐”고 묻는 사람이 있으면 그는 “내 배 속에 들어 있는 책을 말리는 중”이라고 답했다.

ⓓ on → up ‘다가오다’의 표현은 come up이 알맞으므로 up으로 수정. Up은 ‘위’의 의미 외에도 ‘근접’을 뜻하기도 함
