Top colleges plan research facilities in new city

With the government’s Sejong City development project unveiled yesterday, Korea University and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology confirmed they will create new campuses there.

The move is part of the government plans to transform Sejong City into a new hub of science, education and business.

Seoul National University, which showed high interest in joining the move with the two universities, however, decided to hold off on any announcement until the university community finalizes its plans. The university said it will finalize its first draft for relocating some of its departments to Sejong City this month.

Kaist aims to set up a research-centered medical center in the area. As its second campus, Kaist plans to expand its Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering and establish a graduate school for science and technology policy in the city. Other institutes for developing green technology and electric cars will also be established in the region.

Korea University will create its third campus at Sejong City with research centers that focuses on integrated bioscience, information and green technology. It will create masters and doctoral programs there. The university also plans to establish education health, residential, cultural and sports facilities.

To serve children of university researchers, the university is also considering opening an international school for preschool, elementary, middle and high school students in 2012.

Both Kaist and Korea University will each have one square kilometer for their new campuses, larger than originally expected. Korea University will invest 601.2 billion won ($536.9 million) and Kaist will invest 770 billion won in their respective developments.

The new campus plans are set to be completed by 2020.
