4일 문을 여는 세계 최고층 빌딩 버즈두바이(Burj Dubai). 한국형 원전을 도입하는 아랍에미리트에 세워지고 삼성물산이 건설에 참여한지라 한국인의 관심도 각별하다. 흥미로운 것은 시행사인 에마르가 홈페이지에 ‘800m 이상, 160층 이상’이라 밝힐 뿐 정확한 높이와 층수를 공개하지 않는 점이다.

ⓐ 없음 → 콤마 콤마를 넣어주어 전달하려는 의미를 명확하게 함.
ⓑ because → because of because뒤에는 항상 주어, 동사가 있는 절이 오지만, because of뒤에는 명사가 옴.
ⓒ refrains → is refraining 동사를 현재 시제로 쓸 경우, 습관적이거나 항상 하는 행동을 말함. 문맥으로 설명하면, refrains는 “항상 삼가 한다.” 라는 말이 되지만, is refraining으로 바꾸면 “요즘 삼가 한다” 라는 의미가 있음.
ⓓ 800-meters → 800 meters -가 중간에 들어가면 뒤에 오는 단어에 복수의 의미인 s는 빠져야 하며 형용사의 의미가 됨. 명사형을 만들어 주어야 하므로meter에 s를 넣고 -를 빼야 함.



미국에선 흔히 초고층 건축물도 높이에 따라 다르게 부른다. 높이 100~199m는 하이라이즈(highrise), 200~299m는 스카이스크레이퍼(skyscraper), 300m 이상은 수퍼톨(supertall)이다. 국내 건축법시행령은 초고층 건축물을 ‘층수가 50층 이상이거나 높이가 200m 이상인 건축물’로 정의하고 있다. 높이 측정 기준도 여러 가지다.

ⓑ 없음 → known as “200~299미터의 건물들은 skyscrapers라고 불린다” 라는 영어식 문장을 만들어줌.
ⓒ are → as define다음에 절이 오는 것이 아니라 명사 형태가 옴. define A as B의 형태로 고침.
ⓓ very much → greatly very much는 구어적인 표현으로 신문이나 공식적인 문서에는 greatly가 적절.
