Korea sends first rocket into space, orbit missed

일곱 번의 발사 연기 후에 한국의 첫 우주 로켓이 어제 성공적으로 발사됐지만, 과학 위성을 정상 궤도에 진입시키는 데는 실패했다.
The initial success of the launch, which came at 5 p.m. at the Naro Space Center located 485 kilometers (301 miles) south of Seoul in Goheung, South Jeolla, was announced by mission control center after the Science and Technology Satellite-2 separated from the second stage rocket nine minutes after blastoff.

로켓 발사는 5시 정각에 서울에서 485 킬로미터 떨어진 전남 고흥에 위치한 나로 우주센터에서 이뤄졌다. 발사 9분 후 과학 기술 위성 2호가 2단 발사체로부터 분리 됐을 때 우주 센터의 발사통제실이 발사 1차 성공을 발표했다.
But about 50 minutes later, cheers turned into sighs after the center found the satellite had missed the target orbit for reasons that were not immediately clear. Lee Joo-jin, head of Korea Aerospace Research Institute in Daejeon, said in a press briefing that Korean and Russian experts are jointly studying the issue.

하지만 50분 뒤 나로 우주센터가 위성이 정상 궤도 진입에 실패한 것으로 파악되자 환호는 탄식으로 변했다. 곧바로 원인이 밝혀지지는 않았다. 대전에 자리잡은 한국항공우주연구원의 이주진 원장은 기자 회견에서 한국과 러시아 전문가들이 공동으로 원인 파악에 나섰다고 말했다.
Ahn Byong-man, the minister of Education, Science and Technology, said during a briefing at the space center that the satellite seemed to have separated from the second stage of the rocket at an altitude of 342 kilometers, 36 kilometers higher than expected.

안병만 교육과학기술부 장관은 기자 회견에서 위성이 목표 고도보다 36 km 높은 지점인 342 km에서 분리된 것으로 추정 된다고 밝혔다.
Ahn said, “We regret that we could not meet the people’s expectation with the failure to send the satellite into the [proper] orbit ... We will do our best to succeed in the second launch scheduled for next May.”

안 장관은 “위성을 정상 궤도에 진입시키지 못해 국민의 기대를 저버려 유감스럽다. 내년 5월로 계획된 두 번째 발사의 성공을 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
Korea invested 502.5 billion won ($405 million) for the last seven years in the rocket launch. The launch of the rocket could have made Korea the 10th country to place a satellite successfully into orbit from its own territory and the fourth country to succeed on its first try.

한국은 지난 7년간 로켓 발사에 5천25억원을 투자했다. 이번 발사를 성공시켰으면, 한국은 자국 영토에서 성공적으로 위성을 궤도에 진입시킨 10번째 국가, 또 첫 번째 발사 시도에서 성공한 4번째 국가가 될 수 있었다.
