‘Plaza’ a misnomer in downtown
Home to more than 200 events in just the last four months, Gwanghwamun Plaza was deliberately cluttered to keep out protestors - altering its very identity, experts say.

서울은 광장에 관한 한 복잡한 역사를 가지고 있다. 서울시가 2004년 시청 앞 광장을 공개했을 때, 이 잔디로 덮인 타원형의 공간이 시위대들과 시민 단체들이 가장 자주 모이는 곳이 되리라고는 예상치 못했을 것이다. 2008년 여름, 100일이 넘는 기간 동안 서울 광장은 미국 쇠고기 수입 재개를 반대하는 촛불시위를 위해 모인 군중들로 가득했다.
Afterward the city clamped down on the space, surrounding it with police buses whenever there was a chance it could be filled with protesters, creating a vivid symbol of the debate over who has the right to use public spaces, and for what purposes.

이 일이 있은 후 서울시는 시위자들이 광장에 모이게 될 가능성이 있을 때마다 경찰 버스로 둘러싸는 등 광장 단속을 엄격히 하였고, 이로 인해 서울광장은 공공장소를 사용할 권리가 누구에게, 어떤 목적으로 허락될 수 있는지에 관한 논쟁의 상징적 존재가 되었다.
Yet the city is now grappling with similar problems - along with a few new ones - in Gwanghwamun Plaza, which opened Aug. 1. At a cost of 45.7 billion won ($41.5 million), the plaza was meant to become a new symbol of Seoul.
But some experts have said a messy design has kept it from fulfilling its stated goals, and after a barrage of criticism, the metropolitan government conceded that there were problems at a recent press conference, agreeing to hold discussions with experts and the public early this year to decide what to change or add to Gwanghwamun Plaza.

그리고 작년 8월 1일에 문을 연 광화문광장으로 인해 서울시는 지금 비슷한, 또한 새로운 몇몇 문제들 때문에 고심중이다. 457억 원을 들여 건설된 광화문광장은 원래 서울의 새로운 상징물이 될 예정이었다.
하지만 전문가들은 광장의 번잡한 디자인 때문에 광화문광장이 제 역할과 기능을 못하고 있다고 지적한다. 빗발치는 지적들 이후 열린 최근 기자회견에서 서울시는 (광화문광장에) 문제가 있음을 시인하고, 올해 초 전문가들과 대중들을 모아 광화문광장에 어떤 부분을 바꾸고 더해야 할지 의논하는 자리를 마련하기로 결정했다.
In a recent survey of 21 experts in design, engineering and the arts, all unanimously agreed that Gwanghwamun Plaza is in need of changes. Eighteen said design was very problematic, and 15 had questions about the place’s identity. “Do you think it’s a plaza? It should be called a garden,” said Park Seung-kyu, author of “Everyday Geography” and a professor at the Chuncheon National University of Education.

최근 디자인, 공학, 예술 분야의 21명의 전문가들을 대상으로 한 설문조사에서 모든 응답자들은 만장일치로 광화문광장의 변화의 필요성을 이야기했다. 18명의 전문가들이 광장의 디자인에 문제가 있다고 말했으며, 15명은 광장의 정체성에 의문을 제기했다. “(광화문광장은) 광장이라기보다는 정원에 가깝다”는 것이 ‘일상의 지리학’ 저자인 춘천교대 박승규 교수의 말이다.
In Spain, the classical plaza is the center of public life, a city’s religious, judicial and administrative heart and a place where citizens can gather freely on foot. However, it’s hard to see in Gwanghwamun Plaza anything of the friendly, cobblestoned squares of Europe.

스페인에서는 전통적으로 광장은 대중들의 삶의 중심에 위치하며, 한 도시의 종교적, 법적, 행정적인 중심지이자 시민들이 자유롭게 걸어서 찾을 수 있고 모일 수 있는 공간으로서의 기능을 한다. 하지만 광화문광장에서는 이러한 자갈이 깔린, 친근한 유럽의 광장과 같은 느낌을 찾아보기 힘들다.
The reason for this, Park said, was accessibility. Gwanghwamun Plaza is located in the middle of Sejongno, an island in the middle of a busy 10-lane boulevard.

그 이유로 접근성에 문제가 있다는 것이 박 교수의 말이다. 광화문광장은 차로 붐비는 10차선 대로의 한 가운데 위치한 세종로의 중앙에 위치하고 있다.
Making matters worse, the narrow strip is 550 meters (1,804 feet) long but only 30 meters wide - hardly a “square” - and it houses two large statues, one of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, placed there in April 1968, and one of King Sejong the Great, created for the opening of the plaza last year. The two statues are placed about an eight-minute walk apart with Admiral Yi standing in front of a seated Sejong, blocking the view of Gyeongbok Palace and Mount Bukak from downtown.

설상가상으로 광화문광장은 가로 30미터, 세로 550미터로 좁고 긴 모양이고, 여기에 두 개의 커다란 동상까지 위치하고 있다. 1968년 4월에 세워진 이순신 장군의 동상과 작년 광화문광장 개장에 맞춰 제작된 세종대왕의 동상이 그것이다. 이 두 동상은 서로 도보 8분의 가까운 거리에 위치하고 있고 이순신 장군의 동상이 앉아있는 세종대왕의 동상 앞에 서 있어, 결과적으로 시내로부터 바라보이는 경복궁과 북악산의 조망을 가리게 된다.
