Record snowfall causes capital chaos

The biggest snowfall in almost a century nearly paralyzed Seoul’s transportation system yesterday, the first official business day of the new year. As of 1:30 p.m., 25.7 centimeters (10.1 inches) had fallen in Seoul, replacing the previous high of 25.6 centimeters on Jan. 28, 1969. The Korea Meteorological Administration said yesterday’s snowfall can be considered a historic high given that the nation began compiling snow data in 1937.

100여년 만의 최대 적설량으로 새해 첫 근무일인 어제 서울의 교통 체계가 마비되었다. 오후 1시30분을 기준으로 서울에 25.7 센티미터의 눈이 쌓여 1969년 1월 28일에 내린 종전 기록 25.6 센티미터를 갈아치웠다. 기상청은 1937년에 적설량을 관측하기 시작했기 때문에 이 수치가 역대 최고치로 간주될 수 있다고 밝혔다.
The unprecedented snowfall later stretched to Gyeonggi as well as the Gangwon, Chungcheong and Gyeongsang provinces, disrupting road and air traffic. It took hours longer for subway commuters to arrive at work after passengers crowded onto the transportation system considered least affected by the snow.

전례 없는 눈폭탄은 이후 경기, 강원, 충청, 경상 지방으로 까지 퍼져 도로와 항공 교통에 지장을 초래했다. 대중 교통 수단 중 눈에 가장 영향을 적게 받을 것으로 보인 지하철로 승객들이 몰리면서 지하철 통근자들이 몇 시간씩 지각 출근하는 사태가 빚어졌다.
Kim A-ram, a 30-year-old worker at a media firm, said he spent one hour yesterday morning trying to get to Gwangnaru Station in eastern Seoul from his home in Guri on the outskirts of Seoul by bus, although the route was supposed to take only 10 minutes. “Because the buses were so jammed with passengers, I had to let two buses go by before eventually cramming onto the third,” he said.

언론사에 근무하는 서른 살 김아람 씨는 평소 10분 거리인 서울 외곽지역 구리의 자택에서 서울 동부 광나루 역까지 버스로 한 시간이 걸렸다고 말했다. 그는 “버스가 승객들로 꽉 차서 두 대를 보내고서 세 번째 버스에 겨우 끼어 탔다”고 말했다.
Personal vehicles on city roads were sparse. But those brave enough to drive in central Seoul area had to progress at a turtle’s pace. Some cars attempting to climb a slope found themselves stuck in the muck.

시내도로에서는 자가용을 거의 찾아볼 수 없었다. 서울 도심으로 차를 가져 나온 용감한 운전자들은 거북이 속도로 주행해야 했다. 언덕을 오르려던 일부 차량은 눈에 빠져 움직이지 못하기도 했다.
Until 1:05 p.m. all flights were canceled at Gimpo International Airport - an event that had not happened since January 2001. The airport later partially resumed operations of both arriving and departing flights.

오후 1시5분에 2001년 1월 이후 처음으로 김포국제공항의 모든 항공편이 결항되었다. 이후 공항은 도착 및 출발 항공편에 한해 일부 운영을 재개했다.
Although Incheon International Airport did not undergo massive flight cancellations, dozens of flights were delayed. The majority of departing flights that were canceled were bound for China, which also suffered heavy snowfall. Korea’s airport authority advised that those planning to fly check with airport call centers or respective airlines in advance.

인천국제공항에선 대규모 결항은 없었지만 여러 항공편이 연착되었다. 결항된 출발 항공편의 대부분은 이날 역시 눈이 많이 내린 중국으로 갈 예정이었다. 한국 공항 당국은 탑승예정 승객들에게 공항 콜 센터와 개별 항공사에 미리 연락을 취하라고 당부했다.
