New proposals for Sejong City unveiled

Prime Minister Chung Un-chan yesterday officially unveiled the revised development plans for Sejong City in South Chungcheong, including building plans by business giants such as Samsung, Hanwha, Lotte and Woongjin together with Kaist and Korea University.

정운찬 국무총리는 어제 삼성, 한화, 롯데, 웅진 등 대기업들과 Kaist, 고려대 등이 입주하는 계획을 포함한 세종시 수정안을 공식 발표했다.
As he has reiterated since controversies over redrawing plans for developing the city emerged in tandem with his appointment in late September last year, Prime Minister Chung said the original plan by the former Roh Moo-hyun administration to relocate nine ministries and other government agencies will be entirely nullified.

지난해 9월 총리로 내정되면서 세종시 수정 논란에 휩싸였을 때부터 계속 반복해서 말해왔듯이 정운찬 총리는 9개 정부부처와 다른 정부기관들을 이전하는 노무현정부의 원안을 완전히 폐기하겠다고 말했다.
Instead, the four Korean conglomerates and SSF, an Austrian solar power cell module producer, will invest a combined 4.5 trillion won ($4.02 billion) in green industries such as renewable energy, light-emitting diodes and carbon abatement technologies.

대신 4개 대기업들과 호주 태양전지 모듈 제조업체인 SSF가 신재생에너지, LED, 탄소배출 저감 기술 등 녹색산업에 모두 합쳐 4조5천억 원(40억2천 달러)를 투자할 것이다.
Korea University and Kaist, or Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, will each be given one square kilometer of land and operate research-focused undergraduate and graduate courses. Kaist has a main campus in Daejeon, a metropolitan city next to Sejong.
고려대와 Kaist는 각각 1 평방 킬로미터의 토지를 제공받아 연구중심 학부와 대학원 과정을 운영할 것이다. Kaist의 본 교정은 세종시 옆에 위치한 대전광역시에 있다.
The government is set to launch a related legislative process to make it all happen, but strong resistance from Chungcheong residents and opposition political parties indicate that a bumpy road lies ahead.

정부는 수정안 실행을 위해 관련 입법절차에 착수할 준비가 돼 있으나, 충청 주민들과 야당들의 강력하게 반대하고 있어 앞길이 순탄치 않을 것임을 예고했다.
In separate press conferences, leaders of governments in both South Chungcheong and North Chungcheong insisted that “proceeding with the original plan is the sole alternative.” But Seoul and some other regions, with no interest in losing facilities themselves, welcomed the government decision.
별도의 기자회견들을 열어, 충남과 충북 정치지도자들은 “원안대로 추진하는 것만이 유일한 대안”이라고 기존 입장을 고수했다. 그러나 별로 잃을 게 없는 다른 지역들과 서울은 정부의 수정안을 환영했다.
