Korea may dispatch PKO in Haiti

Korea is considering sending peacekeeping troops to Haiti, officials said yesterday.
Multiple sources said they’re willing to bolster aid to the quake-ravaged nation by dispatching peacekeepers. Earlier in the day, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asked the Security Council for an additional 2,000 troops and 1,500 police officers. The council was poised to adopt a resolution to implement the plans.
The current Haiti peacekeeping force consists of 7,000 soldiers and 2,100 international police officers.
A diplomatic source in Seoul said Korea “must absolutely send peacekeepers to Haiti.”
“We’ve been in touch with the Defense Ministry over how to approach the plan,” the source said. “As far as I understand, the Defense Ministry is also in support of sending troops.”
Another source said once the decision is made to send troops, the Defense Ministry will determine the size of the forces.
