Suicide suspected in Samsung Electronics VP's death

A Samsung Electronics vice president, identified as Lee, 51, was found dead in front of his apartment building in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul early Tuesday. Gangnam District police said the suspected cause of death was suicide. According to the police, Lee left a note saying that he was under high stress because of his work, especially the impending announcement of the company’s earnings report.

Lee, an integral part of Samsung Electronics semiconductor division, joined the company in 1992. He received the “Samsung Fellow” recognition in 2006 and was promoted to vice president status the next year.

Samsung Electronics said that they have no official comment on the matter at this time.

반도체 기술 개발 담당

삼성전자 이모(51) 부사장이 26일 자택 앞에서 숨진 채 발견됐다.

서울 강남경찰서는 “삼성전자의 반도체 분야 이 부사장이 오전 10시30분쯤 서울 강남의 주상복합 아파트 앞에서 피를 흘린 채 숨져 있는 것을 아파트 경비원이 발견해 신고했다”고 밝혔다.

경찰 관계자는 “여러 가지 상황을 고려해 보면 아파트에서 몸을 던져 스스로 목숨을 끊은 것으로 보인다”고 말했다. 경찰은 유족 등을 상대로 정확한 경위를 조사하고 있다.

경찰과 유족에 따르면 이 부사장은 유서를 남긴 것으로 알려졌다. 하지만 내용은 공개되지 않았다. 경찰 관계자는 “가족에게 출근하러 간다고 나온 뒤 투신한 것으로 추정된다”고 말했다.

서울대 공대 출신인 이 부사장은 그룹 내 최고의 엔지니어에게 주어지는 ‘삼성 펠로’에 선정되기도 했다. 삼성 펠로에 선정되면 단독 연구실과 연간 10억원 수준의 연구비 지원을 받게 된다. 그는 반도체 관련 기술 개발 분야를 맡아왔다.
