‘컬렉션’의 두 얼굴

‘헨더슨 컬렉션’을 보는 시각은 엇갈린다. 전후 혼란 통에 사라질 위기에 있었던 우리 문화재를 예술애호가가 지켜줬다는 게 그 하나다. 다른 하나는 외교관 지위를 이용, 많은 양의 문화재를 자기 나라로 싸들고 간 그의 행위를 문화적 도둑질로 보는 것이다(김경임, 『클레오파트라의 바늘』).

Writing Tip
ⓐ Opinion…is → Opinions…are 의견이 둘로 나뉘므로 복수의 형태인 Opinions로 바꾸고, 뒤에 Be동사를 are로 바꿈.
ⓑ The one…The other → Some…Others 의견들을 지지하는 사람이 단 둘이 아닌 여러 명의 사람들이 서로 다른 두 의견을 지지하므로, ‘한 사람 다른 한 사람’을 나타내는 one, the other 대신에 ‘어떤 사람들 다른 사람들’을 나타내는 some, others을 넣음.
ⓒ 없음 → who 한 문장에 동사 두 개가 올 수 없음. Saved 앞에 사람이 선행사인 경우에 쓰는 관계 대명사 who를 넣어주어 who saved…로 수정.
ⓓ were on the brink of destruction → may have been destroyed on the brink of~는 ‘~하기 직전에’ 라는 뜻. ‘파괴 바로 직전이었던 유적을 보호했다’라고 함은 실제로 파괴될 상황 직전에 처했었다는 것. 하지만 문화재가 그런 위기에 있었고 그럴 수도 있었다는 가능성을 제시하는 것이 원래 의도이므로 may가 들어간 문장을 써서 ‘파괴 될 수도 있었던 유적을 보호했다’고 고침.

문화부 장관도 나서 문화 교류를 끊겠다며 압박했다. 전방위 공세에 박물관은 백기를 들었다.이탈리아가 게티 박물관을 ‘도둑’ 취급만 한 건 아니다. 유물은 되돌려받되 비슷한 가치를 지닌 다른 유물을 장기 대여해줬다. 국제적 이목을 집중시킨 강온 양면술이었다.

Writing Tip
ⓐ And → 삭제 and는 두 문장을 그 사이에서 연결하는 등위 접속사이므로 공식적인 글에서는 문장 맨 처음에 오지 않음. 구어체에서는 쓰기도 함.
ⓑ 없음 → , however, Getty가 장물 거래 혐의로서 걸렸었으나 도둑으로서만 취급된 것은 아니므로 반대의 의미가 되는 문장이 나올 때 쓰는 however를 써서 문맥을 매끄럽게 만듦. 이 때, 항상 문장 앞이 아니어도 되며 그 문장의 일반 동사나 Be동사 앞에 넣고 앞 뒤로 콤마(,)를 넣어줄 수 있음.
ⓒ only → strictly only를 넣게 되면 다른 부정적인 의미가 추가되는 것으로 느껴짐. 즉, ‘오직 도둑으로서 취급된 것이 아니라 다른 나쁜 종류의 사람으로 취급되었을 수도 있다’는 뉘앙스가 있음. Strictly로 바꿔주면 ‘꼭 그렇게 도둑으로서만 취급된 것은 아니었다’라는 의미.
ⓓ two-thronged policy → two-pronged policy ‘양면술 또는 양면정책’ 이란 말을 쓸 때에는 two-pronged policy가 올바른 표현
