듣기 불편한 직접적인 표현 대신 우회적으로 뜻을 전달하는 게 완곡(婉曲)어법이다. ‘죽었다’를 ‘돌아가셨다’로, 감옥을 교정시설로 표현하는 것이다. ‘해우소(解憂所)’에 걸린 ‘남자가 흘리지 말아야 할 것은 눈물만이 아니다’란 글귀 역시 완곡어법이다. 반면 더블스피크(doublespeak)는 일부러 애매하게 표현하는 어법이다.내가 한 영작

ⓑ 없음 → as 를 써줌 ‘refer to A as B’는 A를 B라고 하다 의 뜻이므로 반드시 A와 B사이에 as 를 씀.
ⓒ vaguely → vague something은 명사이므로 명사의 수식어는 부사가 아닌 형용사를 써줌.
ⓓ on purpose → in order to mask the truth 어떤 목적인지 자세히 적어주는 것이 바람직.
근래 세계 곳곳에서 낙태를 두고 ‘프로 라이프(pro-life)’와 ‘프로 초이스(pro-choice)’ 간 논쟁이 뜨겁다. 프로라이프는 말 그대로 ‘생명 지지’이다. ‘낙태 반대’라고 하지 않는 이유는 ‘낙태’란 용어가 ‘태아 살해’의 범죄성을 은폐하는 표현이기 때문이라고 한다. 정확히 표현하면 ‘태아살해 반대’인데, 이 역시 듣기에 불편한 용어여서 ‘생명 지지’를 택했다.

ⓓ chose → choose 현재 시제이므로 현재를 씀.
