ⓐ Euphemism is an alternative expression that is nicer and slightly gentler than one that could be seen as offensive. Saying “passed away” instead of “dead,” for example, or refering to “prisons” ⓑ “corrective centers.” The expression, “Tears are not the only things men should not shed,” which can often be found hanging in men’s rooms, is also a euphemism. Doublespeak, on the other hand, is a method of saying something ⓒvaguely ⓓon purpose.

A euphemism is an alternative expression that is nicer and slightly gentler than one that could be seen as offensive. Saying “passed away” instead of “dead,” for example, or referring to “prisons” as “corrective centers.” The expression, “Tears are not the only things men should not shed,” which can often be found hanging in men’s rooms, is also a euphemism. Doublespeak, on the other hand, is a method of saying something vague in order to mask the truth.

Writing Tip
ⓐ Euphemism → A euphemism Eu가 ‘우’가 아니라 ‘유’처럼 발음 되는 경우는 반 자음으로 보아 ‘an’이 아니라 ‘a’가 옴. 이와 마찬가지 예로 A year를 An year로 하지 않으며 The United States 를 발음할 때 The 를 ‘디’로 발음하지 않는 경우가 있음.
ⓑ 없음 → as 를 써줌 ‘refer to A as B’는 A를 B라고 하다 의 뜻이므로 반드시 A와 B사이에 as 를 씀.
ⓓ on purpose → in order to mask the truth

Recently, there ⓐ is a heated global debate ⓑ on the use of “pro-life” and “pro-choice” in reference to one’s position on abortion.
Those who are pro-life say the reason why they do not say they are “against abortion” is because the word “abortion” ⓒ is an expression that conceals the criminality of “murdering a fetus.” Strictly speaking, they are “against murdering fetuses,” but they ⓓ chose to say they are “pro-life,” because to do otherwise would make people uncomfortable.

Those who are pro-life say the reason why they do not say they are “against abortion” is because the word “abortion” itself is an expression that conceals the criminality of “murdering a fetus.” Strictly speaking, they are “against murdering fetuses,” but they choose to say they are “pro-life,” because to do otherwise would make people uncomfortable.

Writing Tip
ⓑ on → about about의 핵심 의미는 ‘주변’이므로 가벼운 주제의 경우엔 about을 쓰고 주제가 진지한 경우에는 on을 씀.
