Another surprise gold from Vancouver

Korea continued its impressive run in speed skating events when Lee Sang-hwa won a gold medal in the women’s 500-meter event at the Richmond Olympic Oval in Vancouver yesterday, giving Korea gold medals in both the men’s and women’s 500-meter speed skating races.
어제 밴쿠버 리치몬드 올림픽 오벌에서 열린 여자 500미터에서 이상화가 금메달을 획득해 한국은 500미터 스피드 스케이팅에서 남녀가 동반 우승하며 계속 인상적인 경기를 펼치고 있다.
The win came a day after Mo Tae-bum won the 500-meter event and earned Korea’s first gold medal in long-track speed skating. No other country has won both the men’s and women’s
500-meter gold medals. And Lee’s gold is the first medal for a Korean female long-track speed skater.
하루 전 모태범이 500미터에서 우승, 동계올림픽 스피드 스케이팅 부문에서 한국의 사상 최초 금메달을 획득한 뒤 나온 쾌거였다. 어느 국가도 500미터 스피드 스케이팅에서 남녀가 동반 금메달을 따낸 적은 없었다. 그리고 이상화의 금메달은 동계올림픽 여자 스피드 스케이팅 부문에서 한국이 따낸 사상 첫 메달이기도 하다.
Lee, 20, won gold with a time of 76.09 seconds, edging her competitor and world-record holder Jenny Wolf of Germany by 0.05 of a second. Grouped with Wolf in both heats, Lee took the lead after the first heat with a time of 38.24 seconds and followed up with a time of 37.85 seconds in the second heat.

이상화(20)는 세계기록 보유자 제니 울프(독일)를 0.05초 차이로 따돌리고 76.09초로 금메달을 땄다. 본선 두 경기를 모두 울프와 같은 조로 편성된 이상화는 1차 시기에서 38.24초를 기록하며 선두에 나섰고 2차 시기에서 37.85초의 기록으로 선두를 굳혔다.
Wolf won the silver medal with a total time of 76.14 seconds while Wang Beixing of China won the bronze medal with a total time of 76.63 seconds. Lee remained stoic in the immediate aftermath of the race. Upon glancing up at the scoreboard, she hung her head and began to sob and continued to do so until the flower ceremony.

울프는 합산 기록 76.14초로 은메달을 땄고, 중국의 왕바이싱은 76.63초로 동메달을 획득했다. 이상화는 경기 직후에는 차분했다. 득점판을 흘낏 보고 나서는 그녀는 고개를 숙이고 흐느껴 울기 시작했다. 꽃다발 세례를 받을 때까지 계속 울었다.
“It’s hard to believe that I won,” said Lee in a post-race interview. “I cried at the Olympics four years ago and it was out of disappointment. But this time, it was tears of happiness.” Lee made her Olympic debut as a 16-year-old at the 2006 Turin Winter Games and ended up fifth overall in the women’s 500-meter event.

“제가 우승하다니 믿기 어려워요.” 이상화는 경기 후 가진 인터뷰에서 말했다. “4년 전 올림픽에서 울었습니다. 그때는 실망해서 그랬어요. 지금은 기쁨의 눈물입니다.” 이상화는 16세 때 2006년 토리노 동계올림픽에 처음 출전해 여자 500미터 스피드 스케이팅에서 5위에 그쳤었다.
Although it was a solid debut for an inexperienced teenager, Lee was not pleased with the results and was seen shedding tears when the race results were posted. Known as a consummate hard worker who trained with the men’s speed skating team from an early age, Lee was able to become the world’s top skater in the sprint event of speed skating.

올림픽 출전 경험이 없었던 10대 소녀에게는 괜찮은 성적이었지만, 이상화는 결과에 만족하지 않았고 경기 결과가 공개됐을 때 눈물을 흘리는 것이 목격됐었다. 일찍부터 남자 스피드 스케이팅 선수들과 훈련할 정도로 완벽하게 노력하는 선수로 알려진 이상화는 단거리 스피드 스케이팅 부문에서 세계 최고 선수가 될 수 있었다.
