Prof busted for running drug lab

Police have arrested a Chinese chemistry professor on charges of mass-producing narcotics at his lab and attempting to sell them online, officials said yesterday.

The 32-year-old professor, identified only by his surname, Cha, allegedly made 320 grams of gamma hydroxybutyrate or GHB, a banned substance also known as the “date rape drug,” at his university laboratory, officials at the Yongsan Police Station said. The suspect also attempted to sell the narcotics, worth 64 million won ($56,000) in total, via the Internet, police said.

The professor was employed at a Seoul university in 2008, after graduating from a Chinese graduate school with a degree in chemical engineering, officials said. Cha admitted he produced the drug to make money, but denied taking it himself, they said.

Under South Korean law, drug offenders can be sentenced to a maximum of five years in jail or fined up to 50 million won.
