Suspect in schoolgirl’s rape and murder caught in Busan

부산 여중생 성폭행 살해 피의자가 어제 검거됐다. 경찰은 어제 오후 2시45분쯤 부산 사상구 덕포시장 부근에서 강간전과자 김길태(33)를 체포했다. 김을 검거한 장소는 지난 토요일에 이유리(13)양의 시체가 물탱크 안에서 나체로 발견된 곳으로부터 불과 200~300미터 떨어진 곳이었다.
“Police opened an entrance door of a rooftop house at a three-story villa in Sasang and found a person who seemed to be Kim and yelled his name,” Kim Young-sik, who headed the investigation for the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency, said during a press briefing yesterday. “The suspect ran away and got to the ground, where he started walking slowly.

수사를 지휘한 김영식 부산경찰청 차장은 어제 기자회견에서 검거 당시를 설명했다. “경찰이 사상구에 있는 3층짜리 빌라의 옥탑방 문을 열어 김길태로 보이는 사람을 발견하고 이름을 부르자, 용의자는 곧바로 달아나 지상으로 내려가 천천히 걷기 시작했다.”
“But an officer who was patrolling near the villa spotted him. When the officer approached within three or four meters of Kim, he ran again - into another officer, and fell to the ground,” the policeman said. He said Kim scuffled with the officer for about five minutes before two other patrolmen arrived and helped make the arrest.

“그러나 그 빌라 근처에서 순찰중이었던 경찰관이 그를 발견했다. 그 경찰관이 3~4미터 이내로 그에게 접근하자, 그는 다시 도망쳤으나 다른 경찰관에게 부딪쳐 바닥에 넘어졌다.” 김영식 차장은 김이 그 경찰관과 5분 가량 몸싸움을 벌이는 동안 다른 경찰관들이 도착해 그를 체포했다고 설명했다.
The suspect was immediately transported to the Sasang Police Precinct, where he told the media throng he had been staying in empty houses and denied he had raped and murdered Lee. As he walked inside the station, Kim kept his head low and did not apologize to the victim’s family.

김은 곧바로 사상경찰서로 이송됐다. 기자들에게 김은 빈 집에 숨어있었고 이양을 성폭행 살해하지 않았다고 혐의사실을 부인했다. 경찰서로 걸어 들어오면서 김은 머리를 숙였으나 피해자 가족에게 사과하지 않았다.
Lee’s family had not commented to the press as of last night. Kim had been on the run for 15 days, during which time police had faced fierce criticism for their inability to capture the suspect. Police said they plan to interrogate Kim about his alleged motive and methods behind the crime.

이양의 가족은 지난밤까지 언론에 아무런 말도 하지 않았다. 김은 15일 동안 도주했고, 그 동안 경찰은 용의자를 검거하지 못해 무능력하다는 비난을 받았다. 경찰은 범행 동기와 방법을 알아내기 위해 김을 심문할 계획이라고 말했다.
Lee disappeared from her home in Sasang on Feb. 24, sometime after she talked with her mother on the telephone around 7 p.m. Police initially investigated the case as a kidnapping after they found evidence of a break-in at the home and apparent footprints of an intruder. They kept the matter a secret until they opened a formal criminal investigation on Feb. 27. Police named Kim Kil-tae as the prime suspect on March 1 after they found fingerprints and other evidence at the girl’s home.

피해자 이양은 2월24일 오후 7시쯤 엄마와 전화통화를 한 뒤 얼마 후 집에서 사라졌었다. 경찰은 집안으로 침입한 흔적과 침입자의 신발자국을 발견하고 이 사건을 처음에는 납치사건으로 수사했다. 2월27일 이 사건을 공개수사로 전환할 때까지는 비공개로 수사했다. 경찰은 이양의 집에서 지문과 다른 증거를 찾아내 3월1일 김길태를 유력 용의자로 지목했다.
