JoongAng named exemplary media

Naver.com, Korea’s largest Internet portal, selected JoongAng Daily, MBC, Media Today, Blotter.net and KBS World as the most “exemplary” media organizations among 80 media outlets providing newscast services at the portal site.

According to the announcement from Naver yesterday, a seven-member committee that monitors newscast service operations at the site met earlier this month and selected the five news providers for not having received any user complaints since last November, when the committee started the monitoring. The committee is comprised of local professors and experts in journalism, mass communication, law and advertising. In January 2009, Naver started its newscast service, which lets news media display their latest headlines on the portal’s front-page screen. Users are sent directly to an organization’s Web site when its headlines are clicked.

As companies compete to grab public attention, many have been criticized for using overly sensational headlines and photos - generally sexual ones - or articles with a heavy advertising tone. In February, the committee said Chosun Ilbo, Hankyoreh and Sports Donga received the most complaints.

중앙데일리 뉴스캐스트 모범 언론사로 선정

중앙일보의 영어신문인 중앙데일리(JoongAng Daily)가 네이버 뉴스캐스트 모범 언론사로 선정됐다.

인터넷 포털사이트 네이버는 24일 뉴스캐스트 옴부즈맨 위원회의 모니터링 결과를 발표하면서 중앙데일리를 비롯해 KBS월드, MBC, 블로터닷넷, 미디어오늘 5개사를 모범 언론사로 선정했다. 옴부즈맨 위원회는 "이들 언론사는 지난해 11월 초부터 올해 2월 말까지의 모니터링 기간에 뉴스캐스트 이용자들의 불만을 사거나 항의를 받은 적이 전혀 없었다"고 밝혔다.

2009년 1월 뉴스캐스트 서비스를 시작한 네이버는 지난해 11월 옴부즈맨 제도를 도입해 전체 참여 언론사를 대상으로 기사 및 사진의 적합성, 선정성, 광고성 등에 대해 모니터링을 해왔다.
