Premier’s residence is viewed in bribery case

The prime minister’s residence in Samcheong-dong, central Seoul, was the scene of a re-enactment for the criminal trial of former Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook yesterday. It was the first time a crime re-enactment had taken place at the prime minister’s residence.

서울 삼청동 국무총리 공관에서 어제 한명숙 전 국무총리의 형사재판을 위한 현장검증이 실시됐다. 총리공관에서 범죄혐의 현장검증이 실시된 것은 이번이 처음이다.
Last December, Han was indicted for allegedly taking a $50,000 bribe from former Korea Express Chief Executive Officer Kwak Young-wook in 2006 in return for helping him get a job. Prosecutors have said that Han received two envelopes stuffed with the loot at a luncheon in 2006 at the Samcheong-dong residence.

한 전 총리는 인사청탁의 대가로 2006년 곽영욱 대한통운 전 사장으로부터 뇌물로 5만 달러를 받은 혐의로 지난 12월 기소됐다. 한 전 총리가 삼청동 총리공관에서 있었던 2006년 오찬에서 돈봉투 2개를 받았다고 검찰은 말했었다.
With the permission of the prime minister’s office, an area in the residence was recreated to look exactly as it did during the luncheon that was held Dec. 20, 2006. In attendance yesterday were Han, Kwak, the prosecution, bodyguards and several others who were present at the event in question. Kwak had said during his own trial that he placed two envelopes - one with $20,000 and the other with $30,000 - on a chair.

총리실의 허락을 받아 공관 일부가 2006년 12월20일에 있었던 오찬장과 똑같이 보이도록 재배치됐다. 어제 현장검증에는 한 전 총리, 곽영욱, 검찰, 경호원, 기타 관계자들이 참여했다. 곽은 각각 2만 달러와 3만 달러가 든 봉투 2개를 의자 위에 놓아두었다고 법정에서 진술했다.
During yesterday’s proceeding, members of the prosecution re-enacted the scene in which Kwak would have placed the two envelopes, following Kwak’s directions. The luncheon was also attended by current Democratic Party leader and then-Commerce Minister Chung Sye-kyun as well as then-Minister of Construction and Transportation Kang Dong-suk.

어제 현장검증에서 검찰 관계자들은 곽의 지시에 따라 곽이 2개의 돈봉투들을 놓아두는 장면을 재연했다. 그날 오찬에는 당시 산자부 장관이었던 정세균 현 민주당 대표와 강동석 당시 건교부 장관도 참석했었다.
The main focus of the re-enactment yesterday was the last part of the luncheon when participants stood. Kwak has said during the trial that at the luncheon, participants all left simultaneously except for Chung and Kang, who went out before everyone else. Kwak said that afterwards, only Han and he were left in the room and that he then placed two envelopes on the chair. However, Han’s lawyer has been arguing that at these sorts of luncheons, it was usually Han who stepped out of the room first.

어제 재연의 핵심은 참석자들이 자리를 떠나는 오찬의 마지막 부분이었다. 곽은 정과 강은 다른 참석자들보다 먼저 나갔고 나머지 오찬 참석자들은 모두 동시에 자리에서 일어났다고 법정에서 진술했었다. 나중에 곽은 한 전 총리와 자신만이 오찬장에 마지막으로 남아있었고 그때 돈봉투 2개를 의자 위에 놓아두었다고 말했다. 그러나 한 전 총리의 변호사는 이런 종류의 오찬에서는 일반적으로 한 전 총리가 가장 먼저 자리를 떠났다고 주장해왔다.
Before the re-enactment, the prosecution verified that the path leading to the luncheon room was exactly like it was back in 2006. Han arrived at the Samcheong-dong residence a little before the re-enactment started along with her lawyer. The re-enactment was initially planned to last an hour but ended up taking three hours.

재연이 시작되기 전에 검찰은 오찬장으로 이르는 통로가 2006년 때와 똑같은지 확인했다. 한 전 총리는 현장검증이 시작되기 조금 전에 변호사와 함께 삼청동 총리공관에 도착했다. 현장검증은 한 시간 동안 진행되도록 계획돼 있었으나 결국 세시간이 걸렸다.
