South Korean Navy ship sinks in Yellow Sea

Mystery surrounding the sinking of a South Korean naval patrol combat boat deepened yesterday as the administration and the military were unable to give a clear cause of the Friday night incident that sank a 1,200-ton vessel with 104 crew members onboard.

Shortly after the sinking of the Cheonan during a patrol mission in the Yellow Sea around 9:45 p.m. Friday, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said that an unidentified explosion had created a hole on the bottom of the ship, causing it to sink. Since the military was unable to approach the sunken ship due to the strong currents and low visibility, no announcement was made as of yesterday afternoon about what had caused the incident.

금요일 밤 9시45분쯤 서해상에서 초계 중이던 천안함이 침몰한 직후 합참은 원인미상의 폭발로 함정 바닥에 구멍이 나서 침몰하고 있다고 말했다. 군은 거센 조류와 시계불량 때문에 가라앉은 함정에 접근하지 못했고 어제 오후까지 사고원인에 대해 아무런 발표를 하지 않았다.
According to military sources, three possibilities were discussed by authorities - a North Korean attack, an internal explosion and the possibility of having run upon a rock. The military, however, believes that it was unlikely that the Cheonan hit a rock because rocks are scarce in the area. The water depth in the area is reported to be about 24 meters (79 feet).

군 소식통에 따르면, 군당국은 북한의 공격, 내부폭발, 암초에 충돌 등 세가지 가능성을 검토하고 있다. 그러나 군은 그 해역에 암초가 적기 때문에 암초에 충돌했을 가능성은 없을 것으로 보고 있다. 그 해역의 수심은 약 24미터(79피트)인 것으로 알려졌다.
Whether the ship sank due to an internal cause or an external force can be determined by investigating which direction the metal sheets around the hole in the ship’s hull were bent, a Navy source said. “Even before the ship is salvaged, divers can investigate the breach on the vessel, particularly the metal sheets’ bending direction, to determine the cause,” he said. If the metal sheets were bent inward, the breach was created by an outer force, he said. An outward bend would indicate an internal explosion.

함정 침몰이 내부폭발에 의한 것인지 외부충격에 의한 것인지는 선체의 구멍 주변이 어느 방향으로 굽었는지를 확인하면 판단할 수 있을 것이라고 해군 관계자가 말했다. “함정을 인양하기 전에도 잠수사들이 배가 파괴된 부위, 특히 철판이 굽은 방향을 조사할 수 있다.”고 이 관계자는 말했다. 만약 철판이 안으로 굽었으면, 외부 충격에 의해 배가 파괴된 것이고, 바깥으로 굽었으면 내부폭발 가능성을 나타내는 것이라고 그는 말했다.
If the incident was caused by an explosion from inside, the military is expected to face severe criticism. A series of deadly accidents has marred the military throughout the month. Three pilots were killed in the F-5 fighter jet crash on March 2 and an Army helicopter crash on March 3 killed two more soldiers.

만약 내부폭발에 의해 사고가 난 것이라면 군은 엄중한 비난을 면치 못할 것이다. 이달 들어 연속적으로 발생한 사망사고로 군은 이미 손상을 입은 상태다. 3월2일에 F-5 전투기가 추락해 조종사 3명이 사망했고, 3월3일엔 육군 헬기가 추락해 2명이 사망했다.
