The tide finally turns for the South

The deteriorating situation at the central front had caused our forces to withdraw farther south of the 37th parallel. The Chinese third offensive had sent our forces reeling and once in flight, the South Korean and UN forces kept being pushed south.

전선의 상황 악화로 우리 군은 마침내 북위 37도 선까지 밀렸다. 중공군의 3차 공세가 워낙 거셌고, 한 번 밀리기 시작한 국군과 연합군은 숨 돌릴 틈도 없이 계속 남하했다.
It was time to regroup. To replace Gen.Walton Walker, who had been killed earlier in a car crash, Gen. Matthew B. Ridgeway, who always wore a grenade on his uniform, had assumed command of the 8th Army. A ferocious general just like Walker, he was eager to strike back.

그러나 전열을 갖춰야 했다. 제대로 된 준비를 한 뒤에 반격을 해야 할 시점이었다. 월튼 워커 장군의 후임으로 매튜 리지웨이 장군이 미 8군 사령관에 취임했다. 그는 가슴에 항상 수류탄을 걸고 다녔다. 워커 장군에게 뒤지지 않는 맹장(猛將)이었다. 그는 반격에 강한 집착을 보였다.
When urgent reports informed him of the renewed Chinese offensive at the beginning of January 1951, shortly after he had taken over command, Ridgeway rushed immediately to the front at Uijeongbu. He saw for himself the rout of the ROK 6th Division and the U.S. 25th Division. It must have shocked him. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the Korean troops’ performance to Syngman Rhee and said that unless the president showed some leadership, he would not continue to support the South Korean troops.

그는 부임 직후인 51년 1월 초에 중공군의 공세가 다시 불붙었다는 보고를 받고 곧 의정부 전선으로 달려나갔다. 국군 6사단과 미군 25사단 병사들이 형편없이 적군에 쫓겨 후퇴하는 장면을 직접 목격했다고 한다. 그에게는 몹시 충격적이었던 모양이다. 그는 이승만 대통령에게 강한 불만을 토로했다. “각하가 한국군을 통솔할 만한 지도력을 보여 주지 않는다면 우리는 한국군을 지원하지 않겠다”는 내용이었다.
Perhaps it was because of that threat, but high-ranking government officials who had rarely visited the front before came in a steady flow to offer encouragement to the troops from that point on.

그 때문인지는 모르겠지만 그 뒤로 한국 정부의 고위층 인사들이 일선 부대를 방문하는 일이 잦아졌다. 이승만 대통령과 장면 국무총리, 신성모 국방부 장관이 부대를 찾아 장병을 격려했다.
Meanwhile, my division, which was part of the U.S. 1st Corps, and the rest of the corps had not seen any Chinese activity for some time. The offensive that had pushed southward to a line above Osan (today’s Yongin) seemed to have entered a lull.

한편, 국군 1사단이 속해 있던 미 1군단의 정면에는 적의 그림자가 눈에 띄지 않았다. 거세게 밀고 내려오던 중공군의 공세는 오산과 금량장(지금의 용인)까지 내려온 뒤 멈춘 상태였다.
I sent out reconnaissance patrols to keep tabs on the enemy while I kept training and rehabilitating my units. The replacement for Col. Cho Jae-mi, commander of the 15th Regiment, who was transferred out of the division, was Lt. Col. Kim An-il. He came up with a brilliant idea one day. He suggested that to beat the Chinese, “We need some Chinese who know them well.”

나는 소규모의 병력을 접적(接敵) 지역에 파견해 수색정찰을 계속하면서 부대의 훈련과 정비에 힘을 쏟았다. 조재미 대령의 후임으로 15연대장을 맡은 김안일(예비역 준장) 중령이 이때 기가 막힌 아이디어를 냈다. 그는 “중공군과 싸우려면 그들을 잘 아는 중국인이 필요하다”고 했다.
It was a proposal to make use of the Chinese who were permanently living in Korea. After some searching, he put together a special reconnaissance unit composed of these men. This unit immediately performed admirably. They captured Chinese prisoners and gathered volumes of useful intelligence.

이야기인즉슨, 한국에 거주하는 화교(華僑) 청년들을 활용하자는 제안이었다. 그럴듯했다. 김안일 중령은 즉시 수소문 끝에 화교 청년 50여 명을 모아 왔다. 그는 이들로 수색대를 편성했다. 화교 수색대는 즉시 전과를 올리기 시작했다. 중공군 포로를 잡거나 그들로부터 충실한 정보를 얻어 왔다.
