Mission shifts from rescue to salvage

Korea’s military began preparations to salvage the sunken Navy patrol ship Cheonan yesterday, after the families of the 45 sailors still missing from the disaster asked them to call off rescue operations a day early.

실종 승조원 45명의 가족들이 구조작업을 중단해달라고 전날 요청해와 군당국은 어제 침몰한 초계함 천안함의 인양작업을 준비하기 시작했다.
After the body of a missing sailor was recovered from the rear half of the sunken ship, the families said they did not want to risk the death of another would-be rescuer. Warrant Officer Han Joo-ho died last Tuesday after a dive into the frigid, murky waters where the ship went down, and a fishing boat involved in rescue operations was downed on Friday. Two sailors of the boat were found dead on Saturday and seven other crew members from that boat are still missing.

함미에서 실종 승조원의 시신이 발견되자 실종자 가족들은 더 이상 구조작업자의 추가 희생을 원치 않는다고 말했다. 한주호 준위가 함정이 침몰한 차갑고 흐린 바닷물 속으로 잠수하다가 화요일 사망했고, 구조작업에 참여했던 어선 한 척이 금요일 침몰했다. 침몰한 어선의 선원 2명은 토요일 시신으로 발견됐으나 나머지 선원 7명은 여전히 실종 상태다.
In a wrenching decision, the families asked the Navy to stop the underwater search and begin hoisting up the Cheonan. “We are asking the Navy to call off the rescue operation,” Lee Jeong-guk, who represents the sailors’ relatives, said during a media briefing at 9:45 p.m. Saturday at the Pyeongtaek fleet. “We are not saying hope for their survival has faded away. Relatives [of the missing crew] have agreed to ask the Navy not to make further efforts to enter the sunken hull because we worry that more could be sacrificed.”

고통스러운 결정을 한 실종자 가족들은 해군에게 수중 탐색을 중단하고 천안함을 인양해달라고 요청했다. 평택 함대에서 토요일 밤 9시45분에 가진 기자회견에서 실종자 가족 대표 이정국씨는 “구조작전을 중단해줄 것을 해군에게 요청합니다. 우리는 실종자들이 생존해 있을 것이라는 희망이 사라졌다고 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 추가 희생을 우려하기 때문에 침몰한 선체로 들어가는 노력을 더 이상 하지 말아달라고 해군에 요청하기로 실종자 가족들이 합의했습니다.”고 말했다.
Hope for the sailors’ survival faded after the body of Senior Chief Petty Officer Nam Ki-hoon, 35, was recovered at around 6:10 p.m. Saturday inside the petty officers’ mess hall in the rear section of the corvette, according to defense officials in Seoul. His body was found half-clothed in battle dress uniform.

국방부 관계자들에 따르면 토요일 오후 6시10분쯤 함미 부분 하사관 식당 안에서 남기훈 상사(35)의 시신이 발견되면서 실종자들의 생존 가능성은 희박해졌다. 남 상사의 시신은 전투복 하의를 입은 채로 발견됐다.
Nam’s body was immediately taken aboard a South Korean rescue vessel Gwangyang and then transferred onto the ship Dokdo. Yesterday morning, his body was flown to the Second Naval Fleet base in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, via helicopter. The families have demanded that the Navy return any other bodies recovered during the salvage operation to the Pyeongtaek fleet base. But they have agreed with the military that they will not discuss any funeral arrangements until all the bodies have been recovered.
남 상사의 시신은 곧바로 구조선 광양함에 실려 상륙함 독도함으로 이송됐다. 어제 아침 그의 시신은 헬기로 경기도 평택 제2함대 기지로 옮겨졌다. 실종자 가족들은 인양작전 중에 발견되는 시신들은 모두 평택 함대 기지로 이송해달라고 해군에게 요청했다. 그러나 실종자 가족들은 시신들이 모두 발견되기 전까지는 어떤 장례 절차도 논의하지 않기로 군 당국과 합의했다.
