Salvage workers have discovered several bodies inside the wreck of the Cheonan, a sunken naval ship that was retrieved Thursday, an officer said. The discovery reinforced beliefs that many of the vessel's 44 missing crew members were trapped inside when it sank last month near the North Korean border.

Several bodies were found when salvage workers entered the stern of the 1,200-ton Cheonan corvette to install water pumps after a crane raised it from the sea, but they did not attempt to recover them as they could have damaged the bodies, the officer said on condition of anonymity without providing further details.

Of the Cheonan's 104 crew members, 58 were rescued as it sank and two have been found dead since. The ship was torn in half in an unexplained explosion on March 26 and sank near the tense Yellow Sea border with North Korea. [YONHAP]
