Another body from sunken S. Korean ship retrieved

The body of another missing sailor from a sunken South Korean naval ship was retrieved late Thursday, the military said, increasing the number of sailors confirmed dead to 39 after their ship blasted apart near the inter-Korean border last month. The body was identified as that of Petty Officer First Class Park Bo-ram, the military said, adding that the 24-year-old officer was found inside a chimney separated from the stern of the ship. Navy divers found the body at about 9:20 p.m. while working underwater to pull the chimney from the area where the stern was salvaged, the military said.

Park was clad in a combat uniform with a name tag, military officers said.

He is survived by his parents and a younger brother.

"We're going to move the body to Baengnyeong Island and then to Pyeongtaek by helicopter tonight, if possible," a military official said, requesting not to be named. Relatives plan to hold a five-day funeral in the name of the Navy for the fallen soldiers at a Navy base in Pyeongtaek, about 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) south of Seoul. The date has not been decided, as the bodies of some missing sailors have not been recovered and the wreckage has yet to be salvaged completely. The 1,200-ton navy corvette Cheonan was torn into two by a mysterious explosion while patrolling the tense Yellow Sea border with North Korea on March 26, sparking speculations of an attack by the North. Among the 104 crew members aboard, 58 were rescued and seven others remain missing. The military believes Park may have been thrown upward into the chimney due to a strong explosion from the bottom while working in an engine control room.

폭발 충격에 튕겨 올라 연돌 속으로 들어간 듯

군이 22일 밤 천안함 함미에서 떨어져 나간 연돌(연통) 안에서 실종 장병 8명 중 한 명인 박보람(24) 하사의 시신을 발견했다. 군 관계자는 이날 “오후 9시21분쯤 함미에서 떨어져 나가 해저에 가라앉은 연돌을 인양하기 위해 해군 해난구조대(SSU) 요원들이 수중작업을 하던 중 연돌 안쪽에서 박 하사의 시신을 발견했다”며 “발견 당시 전투복 차림이었다”고 밝혔다. 박 하사의 시신이 발견됨에 따라 천안함 실종 장병은 7명으로 줄었다.

두 동강 난 천안함 함미 부분에 자리한 연돌은 기관조정실 상부에 위치하고 있으며 박 하사는 천안함 폭발 직전 기관조정실에서 근무 중이었던 것으로 파악됐다. 이에 따라 군은 박 하사가 폭발 충격으로 위로 튕겨져 연돌 속으로 들어간 채 의식을 잃고 물속에 가라앉은 것으로 추정하고 있다. 군은 이날 밤 박 하사의 시신을 백령도 해병 6여단 의무부대로 옮긴 뒤 헬기를 이용해 평택 2함대의 천안함 희생자 안치소로 이송했다. 천안함의 연돌은 사고 초기 함미가 가라앉았던 백령도 서남방 1.8㎞ 수심 45m 해역에서 발견됐다. 해군은 함미를 수심 25m 해역으로 옮겨 15일 인양한 뒤 최초 함미 침몰 해역에서 연돌 인양작업 및 금속 파편 수색작업을 벌여 왔다.

충남 아산시가 고향인 박 하사는 평택기계공업고등학교를 졸업하고 2008년 6월 해군 부사관 219기로 임관해 그해 11월 천안함에 부임했다.
