Kim Jong-il reaches Dalian via train, car convoy

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il arrived in China yesterday under heavy security, making a highly anticipated trip to his biggest ally at a time of tension with the South over the sinking of a naval ship and stalled six-party denuclearization talks.

북한 지도자 김정일이 어제 삼엄한 경비를 받으며 북한의 최대 동맹국인 중국에 도착했다. 6자회담이 교착상태에 빠져있고 천안함 침몰로 남한과 긴장이 높아진 시기에 예견됐던 김정일의 방중이 이뤄졌다.
This is Kim’s fifth trip to China, and his first since January 2006. Kim had been rumored to be planning a China trip since the beginning of this year. Kim was seen entering the five-star Furama Hotel in downtown Dalian, a northeastern city.
김의 방중은 이번이 다섯 번 째이고, 2006년 1월 이후로 처음이다. 김의 방중 계획은 올해 초부터 소문으로 떠돌았다. 동북지역 도시 다롄의 5성급 푸라마 호텔로 김이 들어가는 것이 목격됐다.
Traffic in Dalian was stopped for almost an hour until a convoy of about 20 cars, including an ambulance, reached the hotel. The hotel’s receptionists declined to answer the JoongAng Daily’s repeated inquiries about Kim’s arrival. Japan’s NTV aired video of Kim’s convoy of automobiles traveling from Dandong to Dalian.

Earlier in the day, around 5:20 a.m. local time, a 17-carriage train believed to be carrying Kim and his delegation reached Dandong, a city near the China-North Korea border. Dalian is about 330 kilometers (205 miles) from Dandong. Regular passenger trains from North Korea to Dandong usually have four to five carriages and arrive in the afternoon.

이날 오전 5시20분(현지시간)쯤 김과 수행원들을 태운 것으로 추정되는 객차 17량의 열차가 북중 국경도시인 단동에 도착했다. 다롄은 단동으로부터 330킬로미터 떨어져 있다. 북한에서 단동으로 오는 정기 승객열차는 객차가 4~5량이고 오후에 도착한다.
Reporters camped out along the railway were asked to leave by Chinese security guards before the train passed, Reuters reported from Dandong. Kim’s stop in Dalian is probably related to North Korea’s plan to encourage North Korea-China economic ties and Chinese investment in North Korea. Dalian is a logistical center in northeast China and a place that can serve as a model for development for North Korea.

그 열차가 지나가기 전에 중국 공안원들이 철도 옆에서 진을 치고 있던 기자들은 쫓아냈다고 로이터 통신이 단동에서 보도했다. 김이 다롄을 방문한 것은 북중 경제협력과 중국의 대북투자를 이끌어내려는 북한의 의도와 관련돼 있는 것으로 보인다. 다롄은 중국 동북지역의 물류중심지이고 북한이 개발 모델로 삼을 수 있는 도시이다.
It wasn’t clear whether Kim’s third son, Kim Jong-un, was part of the delegation. If he is, it would be another indication that he is the heir apparent to his father. Kim’s visit came just three days after the North’s nominal head of state, Kim Yong-nam, met with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Shanghai during the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo.

셋째 아들 김정은이 동행했는지 여부는 확인되지 않았다. 만약 동행했다면, 김정은이 아버지를 이을 사실상 후계자임을 드러내는 또 하나의 방증일 것이다. 김정일의 방중은 북한의 명목상 국가수반인 김영남이 상하이 세계무역박람회 개회식에서 후진타오 중국 주석을 만난 지 3일만에 이뤄진 것이다.
