Writer pushing buttons on TV, again

동성애는 한때 한국사회에서 묵살되었었다. 친구들 사이에서도 거의 논의되지 않았고 결코 가볍게 다뤄질 주제가 아니었다. 그러나 최근 몇 년간, 게이 캐릭터들이 대형 스크린에 나타나면서 이 토픽은 벽장 밖으로 조금 나왔다. 하지만 TV드라마는 노골적으로 게이 캐릭터를 다루는 것에 대해서 비껴서 있었고 게이 커플은 말할 것도 없었다.
Enter the new SBS drama, “Beautiful Life,” which is about a doctor named Tae-sub who is in a relationship with Gyeong-su, a photographer. In the show, the attraction between two men is both physical and intellectual. They even consider marriage.

그런데 SBS 드라마 “인생은 아름다워”에서 의사 태섭은 사진가 경수와 연인 관계다. 이 드라마에서 두 남자는 육체적으로 지적으로 서로에게 끌린다. 그들은 심지어 결혼을 고려한다.
The show is written by Kim Soo-hyun, a veteran soap opera writer with numerous hits to her credit. “I don’t think homosexuality is a choice. Just because something or someone is different, doesn’t give anyone the right to be hostile,” Kim said. “But I expected an uproar from the public.”

이 드라마는 수많은 히트작을 써온 베테랑 연속극 극작가인 김수현에 의해 씌어졌다. “논란을 예상했죠. 근데 동성애라는 게 선택의 문제가 아니잖아요. 그저 나와 다를 뿐인데, 그걸 기피하고 매도하는 건 아주 불공평하다고 생각했죠.”
Kim’s main goal is to make homosexuality a subject that is no longer taboo. “Although there is the occasional complaint from the broadcasting company, it has still been fairly well received,” Kim said. “I actually thought there would be more objections to it, so I’m writing with a lighter touch.”

김 작가의 주 목적은 동성애를 더 이상 금기가 아닌 주제로 만드는 것이다. 방송사에 항의전화가 걸려오기도 하지만 대체적인 반응은 우호적이다. “나도 깜짝 놀랐어요. 사실 더 세게 욕먹을 줄 알았거든. 그래서 조금 편하게 쓰고 있어요..”
Her emphasis is on not the love between two men, but between two people. The main characters are handsome, smart and appealing. “I requested that the actors be two men who looked sharp and would make the perfect pair,” Kim said. “I thought it was a way to eradicate the prejudice and tension that the public may have toward gay couples.”

“남자가 남자를 사랑하는 게 아니라 사람이 사람을 사랑하는 거지. 내가 이 민감한 소재에 덤벼들 수 있었던 것도 그 때문이에요.” 극 중 이들은 엘리트 훈남 커플이다. “캐스팅할 때 두 사람이 무조건 보기 좋아야 한다, 깨끗하고 멀쩡한 청년이어야 한다, 이렇게 주문했어요. 그래야 거북함 없이 동성애를 보게 되고, 편견을 조금이라도 바꿀 수 있을 거라고 생각했죠.”
Kim is known for telling stories about real people. Her scripts depict lively characters, believable plots and the problems that exist in every family. With this formula, she has earned No. 1 ratings throughout her 40-year career.

When asked her opinion of “makjang” dramas, which use racy material including sex, betrayal and violence and have become increasingly available to the general viewing audience, she was firm in her response. “Many producers and writers point to the ratings or viewers as reasons why they are popular, but I think they are very irresponsible,” says Kim. “People in the industry have a responsibility to maintain high standards for the viewers, not bring the bar down.”

성, 배신, 폭력 등의 선정적인 소재를 다루는 막장드라마에 대한 질문을 받았을 때 김작가는 이렇게 대답했다. “작가나 PD들이 시청률이나 시청자 핑계를 대는데, 참 무책임한 얘기죠. 방송하는 사람은 드라마의 수준을 끌어올려야 할 책임이 있어요. “
