Nature finds a way to survive in the city

한강 서부에 위치한 강서습지생태공원은 2002년 7월에 문을 열었다.
According to Wu Dong-geol, a researcher at the Environmental Planning Institute at Seoul National University, the West River Swamp is currently home to 15 elk, four raccoons and one or two wildcats. “This place is also visited by ospreys, sea eagles, Korean buzzards and kestrels during the winter as well,” Wu said.

서울대 환경계획연구소 우동걸 연구원은 강서 습지생태공원에 고라니 15마리, 너구리 4마리, 삵 한두 마리가 살고 있다고 말했다. 이외에도 물수리·흰꼬리수리·말똥가리·황조롱이가 겨울철 강서습지를 찾는다고 한다.
“Shh. This raccoon is pregnant,” whispered Wu as the team approached a three-meter (10-foot) forsythia shrub. Everyone crouched down, breathlessly staring into the shrub, but we could see nothing. “The raccoon’s due date is soon, so because she moves as little as possible and is highly sensitive during this time, she is hiding her deep inside the shrub,” explained Wu.

쉿! 너구리가 임신 중이에요.” 지름 3m 남짓한 개나리 덤불로 다가서자 동행한 우연구원이 귀띔했다. 소리를 죽이고 살금살금 걸어 배를 깔고 엎드려 덤불 안을 응시했지만 보이지 않는다. “출산이 임박한 상태라 움직임이 둔화되고 극도로 예민해져 깊숙이 몸을 감추고 있다”는 게 우 연구원의 설명이다.

강서구 습지생태공원은 주말 나들이객들로 인해 소란스러웠다. 우 연구원은 “서울에서는 보기 드물게 자연생태계가 잘 보전된 곳”이라고 했다.
During our trip, we also saw a spot-billed duck flapping its wings from the migratory bird sighting station. Hoofprints that Wu identified as coming from elk were also clearly visible on the grounds along the trail.

목재를 쌓아 만든 철새조망대에 올라 목을 쭉 내밀고 앞을 바라보자 흰뺨검둥오리가 날개를 푸드덕거린다. 탐방로 한가운데로 접어들자 간간이 손가락 두 개로 눌러 찍은 듯한 발자국이 보였다. 옆에 있던 우 연구원은 고라니 발자국의 전형적인 모습이라고 설명했다.
Since December 2008, Woo has been monitoring the behavior patterns of wild animals at the West River Swamp by putting transmitters on their legs. Numerous sensors and cameras are also installed along their migratory routes.

2008년 12월부터 강서 습지를 모니터링하고 있는 우 연구원은 이곳 너구리·삵 등에게 발신기를 채워 행동패턴을 파악하고 있다. 이동 경로엔 센서카메라를 설치해 놓았다.
Currently, two raccoons, including the pregnant one, are wearing transmitters, Wu said. “Actually, one wildcat was also wearing a transmitter but it was killed while crossing the Olympic Road in March.”

현재 발신기를 차고 있는 동물은 임신한 너구리를 포함, 너구리 2마리. 원래 삵도 발신기를 차고 있었으나 지난 3월 올림픽대로를 건너다 죽었다고 한다.
We poked our heads into many bushes and shrubs, but didn’t see any more animals. At 2 p.m., we decided to hunt for tracks instead. Just as we began to feel our necks ache from staring at the ground for too long, we found a line of wildcat tracks. The prints were so clear that it looked as though we had just missed them.

본격적으로 갈대숲 이곳저곳을 들여다보기 시작했으나 더 이상 동물을 찾을 수 없었다. 전략을 바꿔 흔적을 쫓아가 보기로 했다. 오후 2시쯤이었다. 머리를 숙여 땅을 훑어보는데 목이 뻣뻣해질 때쯤 삵 발자국이 찍힌 진흙이 나타났다. 방금 지나간 듯 모양에 흐트러짐이 없다.
