The Korean poet Yi Sang’s hometown was Seongcheon, South Pyongan Province in North Korea. Even though it is in the northern part of the peninsula it must have been extremely hot in the summer. In his essay titled “The Tedium,” he wrote, “In the morning and evening alike, the intolerable heat wave continues,” and, “I wish it would get dark soon, but summer days in a remote town stretch endlessly, so it feels like I will die before they end.” In today’s terms, such weather would warrant a heat warning.

Writing Tip
ⓑ the Korean peninsula → the peninsula 틀린 표현은 아니나 바로 앞 문장에서 Korean이라는 단어가 쓰였으므로 생략하는 것이 바람직, 영어에서는 같은 말의 반복을 피하는 경향이 있음, 예를 들어 Korea도 the county, the land, the peninsula, the Korean peninsula, South Korea 등으로 다양하게 표현함.
ⓒ intolerable → the intolerable 특정 지역의 더위이므로 정관사 the 사용.

Jeong Yak-yong, a Confucian philosopher during the Joseon Dynasty with the pen name Dasan, suggested eight ways to forget the heat, and Yi’s method coincides with the old philosopher’s first method, to play go while sitting on a bamboo mat. It is said that when one is totally absorbed in the game, one loses track of time. It’s easy then to forget the heat. If you’re actively thinking about how hot it is, it feels even hotter. If you think it is unpleasantly sizzling it feels even more so. How you feel about things depends more on what you think about them than what they actually are.

Writing Tip
ⓐ of the guest room in Choi’s house → 삭제 내용 파악을 어렵게 할 수 있는 군더더기이므로 생략.
ⓓ with the old philosopher’s first advice. The first method is to play Chinese chess or go while sitting on a bamboo mat. → with the old philosopher’s first method, to play go while sitting on a bamboo mat. 정약용이 제시한(advice) 것 중에 첫 번째 방식(method)임 advice를 method로 바꿈, 다음 문장에서 주어 the first method를 서술어 is와 함께 빼고 to 이하를 연결.
ⓔ of Chinese chess or go one forgets the track → one loses track 시간 가는 줄 모른다는 표현은 ‘lose track of time’으로 정해져 있음.
ⓕ It must be → It’s
