폭염주의보

시인 이상(李箱)의 고향은 평안남도 성천(成川)이다. 북쪽인데도 여름이 끔찍하게 더웠던 모양이다. 수필 ‘권태(倦怠)’에서 “아침이나 저녁이나 뜨거워서 견딜 수 없는 염서(炎暑)가 계속된다”며 “어두워 버렸으면 좋겠는데 벽촌의 여름날은 지루해서 죽을 만치 길다”고 탄식한다. 요즘으론 딱 ‘폭염주의보’ 상황이다.

The Korean poet Yi Sang’s hometown was Seongcheon, South Pyeongan Province ⓐ. Even though it is on the northern part of ⓑthe Korean peninsula it must have been extremely hot in the summer. In his essay titled “The Tedium,” he wrote “In the morning and evening alike, ⓒintolerable heat wave continues” and “I wish it would get dark soon but summer days in a remote town stretch endlessly so it feels like I will die before they end.” In today’s term, such weather would ⓓbring a heat warning.

더위에 지친 이상은 최 서방네 사랑 툇마루로 장기 두러 간다. 나름의 피서(避暑)법인데, 다산(茶山) 정약용이 제시한 여덟 가지 피서와 흡사하다. 첫째가 바로 ‘깨끗한 대자리에 앉아 바둑 두기’다. 장기나 바둑이나 몰입하면 도낏자루 썩는 줄 모른다는데, 더위를 느낄 틈이 있으랴. ‘일체유심조(一切唯心造)’라 했다. 덥다 생각하면 더 덥고, 불쾌지수가 높다고 하면 괜스럽게 더 짜증 나는 법이다.
