Obama launches Korean electric car battery plant

U.S. President Barack Obama attended a groundbreaking ceremony for LG Chem’s electric vehicle battery factory in Holland, Michigan, on Thursday, Eastern time, and expressed hopes the plant would help build a stronger local economy, create jobs and help the environment.

버락 오바마 미국 대통령이 목요일(현지시각) 미시간주 홀랜드시에 들어서는 LG화학 전기차 배터리 공장 기공식에 참석했다. 그는 이 공장이 지역경제를 살리고 일자리를 창출하고 환경보호에 도움이 되기를 희망했다.
“This is more than just building a new factory,” Obama said in his speech, “It’s about building a better future for this city, for this state, and for this country.” After his speech, Obama greeted LG Group Chairman Koo Bon-moo by saying “Annyeonghaseyo” in Korean.
오바마 대통령은 연설을 통해 “이것은 단순히 새 공장 하나를 짓는 게 아니라 이 도시, 이 주, 이 나라를 위해 더 나은 미래를 짓는 것이다.”고 말했다. 연설 후 그는 LG그룹 구본무 회장에게 한국말로 “안녕하세요”라고 먼저 인사했다.
LG Chem will invest a total of $300 million by 2013 to build a 500,000-square-meter rechargeable battery factory. Once completed, the plant will be able to supply batteries for 60,000 electric vehicles or 20,000 hybrid vehicles per year and is expected to create more than 500 jobs.

LG화학은 2013년까지 총 3억 달러를 투자해 50만 평방미터 넓이의 충전식 배터리를 생산하는 공장을 짓는다. 완공되면 이 공장은 1년에 전기차 6만대에 사용될 배터리와 하이브리드 자동차 2만대에 들어갈 배터리를 공급할 수 있고 500개 이상의 일자리가 만들어질 것으로 예상된다.
“Shovels will soon be moving earth and trucks will soon be pouring concrete where we are standing,” Obama said. “Because of a grant to this company, a grant that’s leveraging more than 150 million private dollars, as many as 300 people will be put to work doing construction and another 300 will eventually be hired to operate this plant when it’s fully up and running.”

오바마 대통령은 “우리가 서 있는 이 자리에서 흙을 파내는 삽질이 곧 시작될 것이고 트럭들이 콘크리트를 쏟아 부을 것이다. 1억5천만 달러 이상의 민간자본 유치를 이끌어낸 정부의 보조금 지원 덕분에 3백 여명이 건설현장에서 일하게 됐고 이 공장이 가동되면 또 다른 3백 여명은 고용돼 이 공장에서 일하게 될 것이다.”고 말했다.
LG Chem received almost half of its investment - $150 million - from the U.S. government and is to receive tax benefits of $130 million from Michigan. Obama said the factory “is going to lead to growth at local businesses like parts suppliers and restaurants. It will be a boost to the economy of the entire region.”

LG화학은 투자의 절반 가량인 1억5천만 달러를 미국 정부로부터 지원받았고 미시간주정부로부터 1억3천만 달러 가량의 감세 혜택을 받게 된다. 오바마 대통령은 “이 공장은 부품공급업체와 식당과 같은 해당지역 사업체들의 성장을 가져올 것이고 이 지역 전체 경제의 견인차가 될 것이다.”고 말했다.
According to LG Chem, it’s rare for a president to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony of a private company. Obama’s attendance, it said, shows the U.S. government is emphasizing green energy and on the growing, eco-friendly electric vehicle battery industry.

LG화학에 따르면, 대통령이 민간기업의 기공식에 참석한 것은 이례적이다. LG화학측은 오바마 대통령의 기공석 참석으로 미국 정부가 친환경 에너지, 특히 전기차 배터리 산업에 지대한 관심을 갖고 있음을 보여줬다고 말했다.
