Sogang University has hired 12 foreign professors, nearly half of its new faculty, to teach from second semester this year in a bid to strengthen its internationalization, a school official said Monday.
The university, one of the top-rated in the country, will fill 12 of its 25 new professorial posts with academics from various universities in the United States, Australia and other countries. It previously had hired only one or two foreign professors each year. Established in 1960 by foreign Catholic priests, the school has been recognized as one the most internationalized academic institutions in the country.
“The key to strengthening our school’s international atmosphere is to increase the number of lectures in foreign languages,” said a public relations officer at the university. “All the new foreign professors will teach in English and both foreign and Korean students will be able to attend their classes.”
Among the new professors are Son Hi-joo of UCLA, Richard Bonfiglio of the University of Chicago and Dan Disney of Australia’s University of Melbourne. Yonhap
