You have been working hard all year, and you ⓐwant to get away from it all. But as ⓑthe summer arrives and you schedule your vacation, you begin to feel ill. You have a headache, ⓒfeel sick in the stomach and feel lethargic. You ⓓrarely have enough time to have fun, much less ⓔwasting the valuable vacation in bed. But don’t feel so bad about yourself. You are not the only one. According to professor of psychology Ad Vingerhoets of Tilburg University in the Netherlands surveyed 2000 people in 2001, and one in three people experienced the symptoms and suffer from “leisure sickness.” Typically, a perfectionist with a high need for achievement and a high sense of responsibility are more likely to suffer from leisure sickness. You spend days and nights working and did not have time to feel sick, and just as you take a break and lowers the tension, you get ill.

You’ve been working hard all year, and you need to get away from it all. But as summer arrives and you schedule your vacation, you begin to feel ill: You have a headache, a stomachache and you’re feeling lethargic. You barely have enough time to have fun, much less waste your valuable vacation in bed. But don’t feel so bad about yourself. You’re not the only one. According to psychology professor Ad Vingerhoets at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, who surveyed 2,000 people in 2001, one in three people experienced these symptoms. They were suffering from “leisure sickness,” an affliction that typically affects overachieving perfectionists with a high sense of responsibility. Toiling away day and night, these workaholics don’t have time to be sick, but just as they take a break - their stress and anxieties temporarily lowered - they get ill.

Writing Tip
ⓒ feel sick in the stomach and feel lethargic → a stomachache and you’re feeling lethargic
ⓔ wasting the valuable → waste your valuable have fun과 대등하게 이어지는 부분임.

Korea ⓐis a country with no less workaholics than any other ⓑcountries in the world, and if the survey was taken in Korea, the percentage of the patients would have ⓒ been much higher. Korea has no fewer workaholics than any other country in the world, and if the survey had been taken in Korea, the percentage of the patients would have probably been much higher. After all, we sleep the least and work the most of all Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member countries. Koreans work 2,316 hours a year, but sleep an average of 7 hours and 49 minutes a day - a figure that includes infants and children. And of course, Koreans have the fewest vacation days among the nations. The problem, however, is that Korean workers don’t get to take the vacations days they deserve because they’re burdened with too much work.

Writing Tip
ⓐ is a country with no less → has no fewer
ⓑ countries → country any는 단수와 복수 모두와 함께 쓰일 수 있으나 any other 다음에는 단수 명사가 옴.
ⓓ including → a day - a figure that includes
ⓔ Of course, Koreans let less number of vacation days than other nations → And of course, Koreans have the fewest vacation days among the nations. let이 ‘허용하다’의 뜻으로 쓰이기는 하지만 대개는 ‘누가 또는 무엇이 ~하도록 하다’의 형태로 씀.
