Punishments over Cheonan

Defense Minister Kim Tae-young renewed yesterday his pledge to punish senior military commanders for improper handling of the deadly March sinking of the Cheonan.

Military prosecutors are in their final stage of determining the level of punishment for four senior officers, including three generals, for neglecting to maintain combat readiness and take appropriate preventive measures.

“As blunders made by the Ministry of National Defense and the Navy were confirmed by state auditors, I will take due measures” against the military officials, Kim told lawmakers.

The four are among 25 senior military officers accused in June by the Board of Audit and Inspection of mishandling the sinking.
