지구가 단단히 뿔났다. 북극 빙하가 녹아내리고(그린란드), 잠자던 화산이 폭발하고(아이슬란드 에이야프얄라요쿨 화산, 인도네시아 수마트라섬 시나붕 화산), 대지진이 발생하고(아이티·뉴질랜드), 112년 만의 혹서(酷暑)가 몰아치고(일본)…. 한반도엔 ‘뎬무’ ‘곤파스’ ‘말로’ 3개의 태풍이 한 달 새 잇따라 강타했다. 올 기상이변은 북극과 남극, 북반구와 남반구, 동양과 서양을 가리지 않고 수백 년 된 기록을 갈아치우고 있다. 지구의 대재앙을 그린 공상과학 영화를 현실에서 생생하게 보는 느낌이다.내가 한 영작

이를 실용화하기 위해 세계적인 ‘특허 괴물’로 불리는 미국의 인텔렉추얼 벤처스(IV)는 ‘하늘에 닿는 호스(Garden hose to the sky)’라는 프로젝트를 구상 중이라고 한다. 지상에서 성층권까지 길이 29㎞에 헬륨풍선으로 고정시킨 호수를 놓은 뒤 노즐을 통해 액화 이산화황을 성층권에 뿌리자는 발상이다. 대략 3년이면 완공이 가능하고 초기 설치비용 1억5000만 달러에 연간 운영비 1억 달러 정도면 된다고 IV는 추산한다. 물론 또 다른 환경오염 가능성과 환경론자의 반대에 부딪혀 실현될지는 미지수다.
