Shinhan board suspends its CEO

The board of Shinhan Financial Group yesterday decided to suspend its chief executive over allegations of granting illegal loans in a boardroom battle that threatens to seriously damage the reputation of one of Korea’s most respected banks.

한국에서 가장 좋은 평가를 받는 은행 중 하나인 신한의 평판을 심각하게 훼손할 지도로 모를 이사회 격론을 거쳐 신한금융지주 이사회는 어제 불법대출을 해준 혐의에 대해 신한금융지주 사장의 직무를 정지시키는 결정을 내렸다.
After more than four hours of discussions, the 12-member board voted 10-1, with one director abstaining, to suspend Shin Sang-hoon, who has been engaged in a struggle with SFG’s chairman over the future control of Korea’s No. 3 financial group by assets.

4시간여에 걸친 회의를 한 뒤 12명으로 구성된 이사회는 10명 찬성, 1명 반대, 1명 기권으로 신상훈 신한금융지주 사장의 직무를 정지시켰다. 신 사장은 자산규모로 한국에서 3위인 금융그룹의 경영권을 놓고 라응찬 신한금융지주 회장과 갈등을 겪어왔다.
Shinhan Bank, the group’s banking unit, earlier this month filed a complaint with prosecutors alleging that Shin, while serving as Shinhan Bank president between 2003 and 2009, had illegally approved 95 billion won ($82 million) in loans to companies connected to a relative.

이달초 신한은행은 신 사장이 신한은행장으로 재직했던 2003년과 2009년 사이에 친척과 관련된 회사들에 950억원(약 8천2백만 달러)을 불법 대출한 혐의로 검찰에 고소했다.
Banking sources say the complaint filed against Shin may have been engineered by Ra Eung-chan, the SFG chairman, who is under investigation by the Financial Supervisory Service on allegations that he violated a law banning the use of false names in opening bank accounts years ago.

은행업계 소식통들은 차명계좌 개설을 금지한 금융실명제법을 위반한 혐의로 금융감독원의 조사를 받고 있는 라응찬 신한금융그룹 회장이 신 사장에 대한 고소를 꾸몄을 것이라고 말한다.
Ra has suspected Shin of persuading government officials to examine the case, which had earlier been dismissed, in an attempt to remove him as chairman. Moody’s Investor Service, the international credit ratings agency, said this week that Shinhan had been “meaningfully undermined” by the allegations of impropriety involving its two top officials.

라 회장은 자신을 회장 자리에서 밀어내기 위해 예전에 기각됐었던 사안(금융실명제법 위반)을 신 사장이 정부 관료들을 설득해 다시 조사하게 만들었다고 의심해왔다. 국제적인 신용평가회사 무디스는 두 최고위 임원들의 부적절한 행동에 관한 주장들 때문에 신한의 신용도는 “유의미하게 훼손”됐다고 이번 주에 밝혔었다.
Shinhan previously had an unblemished reputation in governance and internal controls, said Beatrice Woo, a Moody’s vice president. Shinhan had been seen by investors as Korea’s best-managed bank, which had resulted in it being the country’s No. 1 bank in terms of market capitalization.

베아트리체 우 무디스 부사장은 신한은 예전에는 지배구조와 내부통제에서 흠이 하나도 없다는 평가를 받아왔었다고 말했다. 신한은 투자자들이 한국에서 가장 잘 경영되는 은행으로 평가해서 시장자산가치로 따지면 한국의 1위 은행으로 평가 받았었다.
