Drunk kitty killer receives suspended prison sentence

A woman who killed a neighbor’s cat by throwing it out of a 10th floor window was sentenced yesterday to a suspended four-month prison term.

Surveillance camera video of the 24-year-old woman, identified only by her last name of Chae, kicked the neighbor’s Persian Chinchilla and tossed it out a hallway window, leading to a rare animal cruelty case.

The defendant, an employee of a hostess bar, was drunk at the time, according to a complaint filed to the prosecution.

In sentencing Chae to four months in jail, suspended for two years, the Seoul Central District Court said she had “cruelly deprived an animal of its life and violated property rights, while inflicting enduring pain on the cat’s owner.”

The defendant, however, had no past record of similar crimes, expressed regret over her actions and paid the cat’s owner 1.5 million won ($1,325) in compensation, it added.

Another cat abuser was booked last month in Bundang, Gyeonggi, for throwing a neighbor’s cat from the 13th floor of an apartment building, blaming the pet for knocking over a flower pot. The cat’s owners reported the case to the police after finding their Persian Chinchilla dead in a flower bed outside the building.
