에밀레
국립경주박물관은 1998년, 국보 29호 성덕대왕신종의 구성 성분을 분석했다. 그 결과 밝혀진 주재료는 구리(85%)와 주석(14%). 뼈의 성분인 인은 전혀 검출되지 않았다. 유명한 ‘에밀레종’ 설화는 어찌 된 것일까. 많은 사람의 생각과는 달리 이 전설은 20세기 이전의 어떤 기록에서도 보이지 않는다. 『삼국유사』에는 ‘경덕왕이 성덕왕을 위해 구리 12만 근을 들여 종을 주조하다 완성을 보지 못했고, 아들 혜공왕이 771년 완성해 봉덕사에 안치했다’는 내용뿐이다. 신종을 기술한 고려·조선시대의 문건에서도 아기의 희생을 암시하는 구절은 발견되지 않고 있다.내가 한 영작

이 전설이 실린 가장 오래된 기록은 미국인 호머 헐버트가 1906년 쓴 『대한제국 멸망사(The Passing of Korea)』인 것으로 추정된다. 헐버트는 “조선 사람들은 어린아이의 희생으로 만들어진 종에서 ‘에미, 에밀레(Emmi, Emmille)’라는 소리가 들린다고 한다. 이 말은 ‘엄마, 엄마 때문에’라는 뜻이다”고 정확하게 기술하고 있다. 그러나 이 책에 따르면 문제의 종이 있는 곳은 경주가 아니라 서울 한복판이다.

ⓑ the book → his book the book도 문법적으로 틀리지 않으나 앞에 저자가 언급되므로 his book이 더 자연스러움.
