In 1998, the Gyeongju National Museum analyzed the composition of the King Seongdeok Bell, which is designated as ⓐnational treasure No. 29. ⓑThe result showed that the bell was composed of 85 percent copper and 14 percent zinc. No trace of calcium phosphate, an ingredient ⓒof human bone, was found, which helped to debunk the long-standing legend about the bell and its creation. The legend has it that a baby was cast into the bell when previous efforts produced soundless bells that would not ring. In reality, there are no written records before the start of the 20th century giving credence to that legend. According to ⓓ“Samguk Yusa”, or “Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms”, King Gyeongdeok tried to build a bell for King Seongdeok with 120,000 geun of copper (72 tons), but failed to complete ⓔthe work. His son King Haegong completed the bell and ⓕdedicated to ⓖthe Bongdeok-sa temple in 771. ⓒ of human bone → in human bone 성분을 나타낼 때는 in을 씀, of는 소속을 의미.
ⓓ “Samguk Yusa” → the history book “Samguk Yusa,”

ⓕ dedicated to → dedicated it to dedicate는 목적어가 필요함.
ⓖ the Bongdeok-sa temple → Bongdeok Temple sa는 절을 뜻하므로 temple과 중복됨.
ⓘ no sentence that → nothing

It is believed that the oldest material containing the legend is “The Passing of Korea” written by American missionary Homer Hulbert in 1906. ⓐHe wrote that Koreans said the bell was made with the sacrifice of a baby and tolled with the sound “Emmi, Emmille.” He also said that the sound “Emmi, Emmille” meant “Mother, because of Mother.” According to ⓑthe book, however, ⓒthe place where the bell was located was not in Gyeongu but in the center of Seoul.

Writing Tip
ⓑ the book → his book the book도 문법적으로 틀리지 않으나 앞에 저자가 언급되므로 his book이 더 자연스러움.
ⓒ the place where the bell was located was not → the bell was located not ‘place’와 ‘locate’는 중복되는 감이 있음, 간략하게 수정할 수 있음.
