Kim’s heir apparent comes out of shadow

The world got its first glimpse yesterday of an adult Kim Jong-un, son of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and his heir apparent.

김정일의 예상 후계자인 아들 김정은의 성인 사진이 어제 처음으로 외부세계에 공개됐다.
Following a one-day meeting of the Workers’ Party, at which the son received government posts that suggest he is in line to succeed his father, the official newspaper of the party’s Central Committee published a group photo of government officials with Jong-un seated in the front row, two seats away from his father.

That image and two additional photos, each with varying numbers of officials, were released by the official Korean Central News Agency hours later. Jong-un was in the front row of all three, but it took Western photo agencies’ blowups to actually see what he looks like.

Dressed in a Mao suit and sporting swept-back hair, Jong-un was expressionless, surprisingly portly and jowly for a man in his late 20s. Previously, the only images available of him were from his school days in Switzerland. North Korea’s official broadcaster, Korean Central Television, released footage of Jong-un at the Workers’ Party meeting later on in the day.

인민복을 입고 머리카락을 뒤로 빗어 넘긴 김정은은 무표정이었고, 20대 치고는 놀랍게도 약간 뚱뚱하고 아래턱에 살이 통통했다. 예전에 유일하게 알려진 김정은의 모습은 스위스 학창시절의 사진이었다. 이날 오후엔 북한의 공식 방송사인 조선중앙TV가 당대표자회의에 참석한 김정은의 모습을 담은 동영상을 보도했다.
According to analysts, Jong-un’s younger sister, Kim Yeo-jong, 23, is also in one photograph, standing next to Kim Ok, who is frequently referred to as Kim Jong-il’s “first lady.” The sister has never been seen in public before, and her photographs have never been released. She and Jong-un shared the same mother, Ko Young-hee, who died in 2004.

북한 전문가들의 분석에 따르면, 김정은의 여동생 김여정(23)도 사진 속에서 김정일의 “여인”으로 자주 언급되는 김옥 옆에 서 있다. 여동생은 예전에 한번도 공개 석상에 모습을 드러낸 적이 없었고 그녀의 사진은 전혀 보도된 적이 없었다. 김정은과 여동생은 2004년 사망한 고영희가 생모이다.
KCNA reported yesterday that Kim Jong-il had participated in a photo session with newly elected members of the Workers’ Party leadership. Kim Jong-un was mentioned in the article, but North Korea did not provide captions for the pictures identifying the appointees.

조선중앙통신은 김정일이 새로 선출된 노동당 지도자들과의 기념사진 촬영에 참석했다고 어제 보도했다. 기사에는 김정은의 이름도 언급됐으나 조선중앙통신은 언급된 인물들을 사진설명에서 확인해주지는 않았다.
