At long last, FTA with EU is signed

The long-awaited free trade agreement between Korea and the European Union, the world’s largest market, was signed yesterday in Brussels, and both sides agreed they will aim to ratify the agreement by July 2011.

세계 최대 시장인 유럽연합과 한국이 어제 브뤼셀에서 마침내 자유무역협정(FTA)에 정식 서명했다. 양측은 FTA 비준 목표시점을 2011년 7월까지로 합의했다.
In contrast, ratification of an FTA between Korea and the U.S. is still pending, though it was made much earlier than the one with Europe. The deal, which has been negotiated starting in May 2007, will lower tariffs, boost trade and investment, and create jobs for both Korea and the 27 EU countries.

한편, 한미 FTA는 유럽보다 훨씬 일찍 체결됐지만 아직도 비준이 이뤄지지 않았다. 한-EU FTA 협상은 2007년 3월부터 시작된 한-EU FTA는 관세를 낮추고 무역과 투자를 늘리고 한국과 27개 EU 회원국들에 일자리를 창출할 것으로 기대된다.
The agreement was signed by Korea’s Minister for Trade Kim Jong-hoon and European Commissioner for Trade Karel De Gucht and others. President Lee Myung-bak took part in the ceremony after he met with Prime Minister Yves Leterme of Belgium at the Egmont Palace and said the two sides should work hard to meet the ratification deadline.

김종훈 한국 통상교섭본부장과 카렐 드 구흐트 유럽연합 통상장관 등이 이 협정에 서명했다. 이명박 대통령은 에그몬트궁에서 이베스 레테름 벨기에 총리를 만난뒤 협정 서명식에 참석해서 양측은 비준 기한을 지키도록 최선을 다해야 한다고 말했다.
“The Korea-EU FTA is a landmark event where this strategic partnership will benefit not just us, but the entire world,” said Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council. “We think highly of Korea, as Korea is the country within the OECD that is achieving the fastest annual GDP growth.”

헤르만 판롬파위 유럽 정상회의 상임의장은 “한-EU FTA는 역사적인 사건으로 이 전략적 동반자관계가 우리 뿐만 아니라 전 세계에 이득이 될 것이다. 한국은 OECD 국가들 중에서 가장 빠른 속도로 매년 GDP 성장을 이룩하는 나라로 우리는 한국을 높이 평가하고 있다.”고 말했다.
“I am very happy that we signed the FTA with the world’s largest economic bloc, which is the EU,” said President Lee. “We are the first Asian country to have signed an FTA with the EU, and we will do our best before the ratification date of July 1 of next year to fully study and prepare for all effects the agreement may have on each industry. “We have agreed to become a strategic partner and cooperate together for a successful G-20 Summit that will take place in Seoul in November,” he added.

이명박 대통령은 “세계 최대 경제권인 EU와 FTA를 체결하게 돼서 매우 기쁘다. 한국은 아시아국가들 중에서 최초로 EU와 FTA를 체결했다. 내년 7월1일 비준 기한 전까지 이 협정에 각 산업에 미칠 모든 영향을 연구하고 충분히 대비하기 위해 최선을 다할 것이다.”고 말했다. 그는 “우리는 전략적 동반자가 되어 11월 서울에서 G-20 정상회의가 성공적으로 개최되도록 협력할 것을 합의했다.”고 덧붙였다.
