Life sentence for rapist of 8-year-old remains

A Seoul appellate court yesterday upheld a life sentence for a 45-year-old man convicted of raping an elementary school girl in a high-profile case that outraged the country.

Kim Su-cheol was arrested on June 13 on charges of kidnapping an 8-year-old from a Seoul elementary school in broad daylight and raping her at his home.

The court also ordered his personal information to be made available to the public for 10 years and that he wear an electronic monitoring anklet for 30 years, the maximum period under current laws.

Kim Su-cheol “caused horrendous injury to the victim by kidnapping her from school, a place where children should be protected by all means, and putting her through six surgeries from the rape,” the Seoul court said in a ruling.

“Considering the graveness of his crime and past criminal records, it is appropriate that Kim be permanently separated from society,” the court said.

Kim listened to the sentence with a his head bowed and said he “will repent.”

He is a repeat sex offender who had spent 15 years in prison for raping a woman in 1987.

Kim appealed against a lower court’s ruling last month.
