3대 세습으로 체제 연장을 꿈꾸는 북한에 대해 “세계에서 유일한 코미디” “최고의 리얼리티 쇼”란 비아냥이 쏟아지고 있다. 마카오에 유배시킨 김정남도 암살하려 했다 하니 ‘막장 드라마’란 평판까지 더하게 생겼다. 혹 김정일-김정은 부자는 경쟁자를 없애고 군만 장악하면 ‘왕권’이 절로 보장된다고 여기는 걸까.
“나라를 정복하는 것과 군대를 정복하는 건 다르다…나라는 사람들의 마음을 얻어야만 정복할 수 있다.” 칭기즈칸이 죽기 전 아들들에게 남긴 가르침이다. “백성이 행복하기 전엔 지도자는 결코 행복할 수 없다”며 넌지시 해법도 제시했다. 그런데도 못난 아들들은 아비의 제국을 온전히 지켜내지 못했다. 이런 금쪽같은 유훈조차 받지 못할 김정일의 어린 아들은 오죽할까.

Maybe, Kim Jong-il and ⓑKim Jong-un think the ⓒ”throne” is secure as long as they eliminate ⓓthe rivals and dominate the military.
Before Genghis Khan died, he left ⓔa lesson for his sons, “Conquering a nation is different from dominating the military. You can only conquer a nation when you win the hearts of the people.” He also presented a solution: “A leader can never be happy before the people become happy.” But, his sons did not live up to ⓕthe great father and failed to maintain the glorious empire. Will Kim Jong-un, who is not likely to get such advice from his father, do otherwise?

ⓑ Kim Jong-un → heir-apparent Kim Jong-un 영어권 독자층을 고려하여 김정은이 공식 후계자라는 것을 명시.
ⓒ “throne” → throne 어떤 표현이나 단어에 인용부호를 쓰면 일반적인 의미가 아니거나 비꼬는 느낌을 줌, 북한의 세습 권력은 실제로 왕좌와 같으므로 인용 부호 생략.
ⓓ the rivals → his rivals 자신의 경쟁자라고 표현하는 것이 더 정확.
ⓔ a lesson for his sons → his sons this piece of advice: ‘~에게 무엇을 남기다’의 표현은 leave 다음에 간접목적어 그 뒤에 직접목적어를 써서 표현.
ⓕ the great father → their great father’s expectations live up to 다음에는 어떤 기준이나 기대가 오지 사람이 오지 않음, ‘~의 기대에 부응하다’의 뜻임.
