지구상에는 10억 명의 인구가 대략 8억 대 이상의 개인용 컴퓨터(PC)를 사용하고 있다. 이들이 쏟아내는 정보는 날로 진보하는 각종 디지털장치를 통해 서로 교류하며 엄청난 지식을 재창출해내고 있다. 이런 시스템이 가속화될수록 쓸데없고 원하지도 않는 지식도 늘게 마련이다. 이런 현상을 ‘무용지식(Obsoledge)의 덫’이란 개념으로 접근한 사람이 미래학자 앨빈 토플러다. 그는 『부(富)의 미래』에서 obsolete(쓸모없는)와 knowledge(지식)가 결합된 용어를 처음 선보였다.내가 한 영작

ⓒ over 800 million → more than 800 million over는 과하다는 뉘앙스가 있음, 일반적으로 ‘~이상’을 나타낼 때는 more than을 씀.
ⓓ PC machines → computers 영작이라고 해서 없는 표현을 만들어 써서는 안됨, 있는 표현 사용.
ⓔ The computer users → They 영어는 동일한 표현의 반복을 피하는 경향이 있음, 앞에 나온 표현을 뒤에서는 다른 표현으로 바꿔 쓰는데 대명사를 사용하는 것도 한 가지 방법.
ⓕ made → took 접근법을 만들었다기 보다는 취한 것임.
ⓖ phenomenon as → phenomenon, calling it 기존의 표현이 아니라 토플러가 새롭게 명명한 현상임.
지식정보화 시대에도 동전의 양면처럼 상대적인 가치가 양립한다. 인터넷을 통한 지식이 끝없이 펼쳐진 듯 보이지만 오히려 독(毒)이 되는 경우도 흔하다. 과학적 지식 없이 편향된 이념적 세력에 휩쓸려 다닌 광우병 파동이나 천안함 사건, 아무런 근거도 없이 살벌한 집단광기를 드러낸 타블로 학력 위조 논란이 그런 사례다.

ⓒ has become → is 굳이 완료형으로 쓸 이유가 없음.
ⓓ the cyberspace → cyberspace 사이버 공간은 추상적인 개념으로 무관사.
ⓔ the harmful spreading of ideas → harmful ideas spread 해로운 확산이 아니라 해로운 아이디어가 확산되는 것임.
