Beware the danger of reductionism
Reductionism is the tendency to attempt to explain complex things by boiling them down to a single theory or cause. Along with determinism, reductionism is a very powerful approach and is one of the two major paradigms in science.Unlike natural science, it may be unreasonable to explain mundane affairs with just one theory or cause because of the human factor. Nevertheless, theories that explain social or individual behavior with a single cause such as genes, economics, sex, language or technology have become a strong paradigm in social science. The part of human nature that prefers simple explanations over complicated expositions is the soil for reductionism to take root in our daily lives. Consciously and unconsciously, we tend to think and communicate in the frame of reductionism. Maybe we are all reductionists. Therefore, we should be more cautious of such tendencies and make efforts to think beyond reductionism.
When something goes wrong, we should investigate the causes and correct the error. However, reductionism could mislead us as well, as we prefer to look for one cause, not a combination of different factors, and we seek that cause not from ourselves but from others. The most notable case of reductionism is what’s called “demonization.”
In the United States, politicians on both the left and right are caught up in demonization. In the last presidential election, George W. Bush was characterized as being responsible for everything that went wrong. He was criticized for the United States’ fallen status in the international community and the economic crisis, and the demonization of him greatly contributed to Barack Obama’s election. President Obama has also found himself a target of demonization — in the course of the presidential election campaign, and even now. Voters who are displeased with Obama cast him as a foreigner and a socialist. In short, he is characterized as a “political demon.”
The liberals consider the Tea Party demonic, and the Tea Party demonizes the liberal camp. The conservatives think that the United States has been a captive of liberal McCarthyism. During the era of McCarthyism in the 1950s, political rivals and anti-government figures were accused of being communists. Today, the liberals are demonizing those with different thoughts about the United States. In both cases, innocent people are being hit with false accusations.
Unfortunately, the demonization of American society has gone far beyond domestic issues, and China has become the target of the offensive now. Over $3 billion was spent on campaign advertisements during the midterm election, and 29 candidates criticized their rivals as “pro-Chinese.” The Republican and Democratic candidates seem to have agreed on “blaming China.” The reductionist argument to blame everything on the exchange rate was rather noble. Both Republican and Democratic candidates attempted to label their rivals as “traitors.” This misguided reductionism covers up the actual culprits of the economic crisis, such as deindustrialization and lack of competitiveness. The United States is supposed to function as the model of democracy. However, some think a civil war has already started in the United States, as the demonization between political factions is spreading quickly.

환원주의(還元主義)는 “다양한 현상을 기본적인 하나의 원리나 요인으로 설명하려는 경향”이다. 환원주의는 결정론과 함께 과학의 양대 패러다임이라고 할 수 있을 정도로 막강한 위상을 자랑한다.
자연과학과는 달리 인간의 의지가 개입되는 세상사를 한 개의 원리나 요인으로 설명하는 데는 무리가 따를 수 밖에 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 유전자·경제·섹스·언어·기술 등 한 가지 요인으로 사회나 개인의 행동을 설명하는 이론들은 사회과학의 강력한 패러다임으로 자리잡고 있다. 복잡한 설명보다는 간단한 설명을 좋아하는 인간 습성은 과학의 세계뿐만 아니라 일상 생활 속에서도 환원주의가 뿌리내릴 수 있는 토양이다. 의식하건 의식하지 못하건 우리 모두는 환원주의의 틀 속에서 생각하고 의사소통을 한다. 어쩌면 우리는 모두 환원주의자다. 그래서 환원주의는 더욱 극복과 경계의 대상이다.
뭔가가 잘못됐을 때에는 당연히 잘못된 원인을 찾아 내고 잘못을 고쳐야 한다. 환원주의 때문에 원인 찾기가 잘못될 수 있다. 여러 개의 원인이 아니라 딱 한가지 원인을 찾는 것도 문제지만 원인을 내가 아닌 남에게서만 찾는 습성도 문제다. 대표적으로 잘못된 환원주의는 ‘악마 만들기(demonization)’다.
미국 정치 세계를 들여다 보면 좌파·우파 사이에 ‘악마 만들기’가 한창이다. 지난 대선에는 모든 게 ‘부시 탓’이었다. 국제사회에서 추락된 미국의 위신과 경제 난국이 모두 조지 W 부시 대통령의 잘못이라는 ‘부시 악마 만들기’가 버락 오바마 대통령의 당선에 기여했다. 대선 과정에서도 그렇고 지금도 버락 오바마 대통령은 ‘악마 만들기’의 타깃이다. 오바마 대통령에게 불만을 품은 유권자들은 그를 ‘외국인, 이슬람 신자, 사회주의자’라고 본다. 한마디로 ‘정치적인 악마’다.
리버럴 진영은 보수주의 유권자단체인 ‘티파티(Tea Party)’를 ‘악마’로 보고 티파니는 리버럴 진영이 ‘악마’라고 본다. 미국의 보수진영은 지난 수 십 년간 미국이 ‘리버럴 매카시즘(Liberal McCarthyism)’의 포로였다고 생각한다. 1950년대 초 매커시즘이 정적이나 체제에 반대하는 사람을 공산주의자로 몰아 세운 것처럼, 자유주의자들도 미국에 대한 생각이 그들과 다른 사람들을 ‘악마’로 만들었다는 것이다. 매카시즘이나 ‘리버럴 매카시즘’이나 생사람 잡는 데는 하등 다를 게 없다는 주장이다.
불행히도 미국 사회의 ‘악마 만들기’는 국내 문제에 그치지 않고 중국을 타깃으로 삼았다. 지난 2일 중간 선거에는 30억 달러에 달하는 선거 광고비가 들어갔다. 29명의 후보들이 상대편 후보들을 ‘친중(親中) 악마’로 몰았다. ‘중국 때리기’에는 공화당·민주당 후보 모두 의견이 일치했다. ‘모든 게 환율 때문’이라는 환원주의적 주장은 그나마 고상한 것이다. 민주당과 공화당 후보들은 상대편에게 매국노라는 낙인을 찍으려고 했다. 이러한 잘못된 환원주의는 탈산업화, 경쟁력 상실 등 미국 경제 위기의 진정한 주범을 가리는 역할을 했다. 세계 민주주의의 모범으로 기능해야 할 미국이다. 그러나 미국의 정파 간 갈등이 빚은 ‘악마 만들기’ 성행은 “미국에서 내전은 이미 시작됐다”말까지 나오고 있다.
