북극항로
지난해 7월 울산항에 독일 벨루가해운 소속 화물선 두 척이 입항했다. 프래터니티호와 포사이트호다. 며칠 뒤 두 배는 건설자재를 싣고 유럽으로 출항했다. 그런데 엉뚱하게도 뱃머리는 북쪽인 블라디보스토크를 향했다. 그곳을 지난 배는 계속 북진(北進)했다. 마침내 러시아와 미국 알래스카 사이의 베링해협을 통과해 북극해를 가로질러 독일 함부르크에 무사히 도착했다. 북극항로 첫 상업 운항의 성공이다. 1년 반의 준비 기간을 가진 벨루가해운의 북극항로 도전은 미국 항공우주국(NASA)의 위성사진이 계기가 됐다고 한다. 북극해 빙하가 항해가 가능할 정도로 녹은 것으로 나타났던 거다.내가 한 영작

ⓖ the Bering Strait → through the Bering Strait pass는 스쳐지나 가거나 건너가는 것을 뜻함, 통과의 의미로는 through까지 써야 함.
북극항로는 시베리아 해안을 따라 이어지는 바닷길이다. 러시아 정부가 대대적인 투자에 나서면서 동토(凍土)의 땅 시베리아가 깨어날 조짐이다. 한국에도 기회다. 아시아 항구 중 북극항로를 이용하기 위한 최적의 위치인 부산항이 세계적인 허브항으로 발돋움할 수도 있다. 쇄빙선 개발 등 조선업계에도 호재다. 그러나 마냥 반겨도 좋은 일일까. 지구온난화로 얼음이 녹으면서 항로가 만들어지는 이 아이러니한 상황이 축복만은 아닐 터다. 얼음 없는 북극이 초래할지도 모를 재앙은 북극곰만의 문제는 아닐 테니까.
